"Like individual human beings, landscapes and civilizations display distinctive characteristics. While they change in the course of time they retain a uniqueness derived in large part from the set of conditions under which they emerged and also from the factors which influenced their subsequent evolution. The phrases "genius loci" and "spirit of place" symbolize the forces or structures generally hidden beneath the surface of things which determine the uniqueness of each place."

Susan Chastain worked her way to jazz
Her repertoire includes tunes from the Great American Songbook
Blade - 15 May 2008
... ANN ARBOR, MI - Being a jazz singer and owning a jazz club in a hip college town would be a dream come true for a lot of people.

Not Susan Chastain.

The jazz vocalist and owner of the Firefly Club in Ann Arbor, who will perform at Murphy's Place tomorrow, never imagined a career in jazz. In fact, it was probably the last thing she ever thought she'd be doing for a career ...

The Lite Fare: The sun never sets on College Park
Diamondback - 15 May 2008
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - Past years have shown us downtown College Park is simply not the most business-friendly environment. The recent folding of Potomac Video and, before that, the tragic demise of Wawa, testify to that fact. Many other local commercial concerns are likely to be run off of Route 1 over the summer. Already, there are plans in the works to replace them. This time, owners are taking a more conservative approach - investing in businesses that are bound to achieve returns in a college town. Students can expect anywhere between 10 to 15 new bars downtown when they return. Among the ideas for these new establishments is "Cornerstone 2," a dive that will boast of itself as a tribute to the distinct and vibrant atmosphere of the original Cornerstone. There are also plans for adjacent English, Irish and Scottish pubs. But perhaps the most innovative concept is the proposed construction of a 20-foot-tall keg where patrons pay for time slots underneath the spigot ...

Ways explored for making Iowa City safer for bicyclists
The Gazette - 15 May 2008
... IOWA CITY, IA — To make the city more bike friendly, Iowa City should implement a comprehensive bike plan, increase the number of main routes with wide shoulders or bike lanes and educate people about bicycling, a national cycling organization says.

Iowa City, once designated a bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists, was denied the moniker last year after the group tightened its standards. As part of Bike to Work Week, about 25 people attended a Wednesday noon forum at the Iowa City Public Library to talk about reclaiming the title.

College towns are represented liberally on last year's list of bike friendly communities, but the league gave Iowa City an honorable mention. The group lauded the city's percentage of bike commuters, installation of way-finding signage and other efforts but said more could be done to expand bike use ...

'The party needs to be over'
Chapel Fest raises concerns for city officials
Post - 15 May 2008
... NEWARK, DE - Disorderly conduct. Disorderly premises. Failure to disperse. Resisting arrest.

These were just some of the charges brought against the 50 or so people arrested by the Newark Police Department last Saturday, May 10, during an annual block party called Chapel Fest.

The unsanctioned, off-campus event is held yearly at homes along North Chapel Street in Newark, near the downtown district. The party, which attracts students from the University of Delaware and out-of-town visitors, has raised concerns for city officials in the past, and this year was no exception ...

$10 million for Storrs Town Center parking garage
StamfordPlus - 14 May 2008
... STORRS, CT - Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that $10 million to fund a share of a parking garage that will serve the Storrs Town Center at the edge of the University of Connecticut campus is expected to gain approval when the state Bond Commission meets May 30.

“This is our opportunity to shape a college town,” Governor Rell said. “UConn has become truly a world class institution and we are so proud of how far our flagship university has come in so short a time. Still, I think we would all agree that one key ingredient is missing at UConn – a town center that would provide Mansfield with a ‘college town’ look and feel ...

Star Observer - 14 May 2008
... AUSTRALIA - Sydney is not the only city suffering at the hands of the property shortage. Figures released by the Real Estate Institute of NSW show other university towns like Newcastle and Wollongong are also feeling the pinch ...

“Scrabbling round looking for nonexistent property is not a good way for a young person to be starting out on their university life,” REINSW president Steve Martin said.

“However, it’s not only students who are facing the realities of a rental market that is tighter than it’s ever been. I’m told of a recent open day at a fairly highly priced townhouse where there were 60 would-be tenants lined up to see the place ...

The Downtown Partnership, a group made up of Church Street Marketplace businesses, the Burlington Business Association and the city's Community and Economic Development Office, is grappling with that question.

It will ask the City Council tonight for support to update downtown studies from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The council will vote tonight on a resolution that would ask the partnership "to formally identify trends, issues, gaps and recommendations for our downtown by convening a public process with downtown stakeholders." ...

Projects similar to city’s under way
Citizens Voice - 12 May 2008
... WILKES- BARRE, PA - The private developer investing $19.4 million for a major renovation project near King’s College on North Main Street is no stranger to projects benefiting college campuses.

David Yeager of the Radnor Property Group in Wayne, Delaware County, is embarking on the project to demolish Rodano’s Pizza and the blighted Corcoran Printing building and former Mary MacIntosh laundry and dry cleaning business on North Main Street to construct a mixed-use facility for student housing, a day care center and retail space.

While this is his first project in Wilkes-Barre, Yeager’s company is undertaking a similar project in Lancaster to transform the 45-acre former Armstrong tile manufacturing complex into the “Northwest Gateway” for Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster Economic Development Corp. and Lancaster General Hospital. University’s party guide promotes safety
Star - 12 May 2008
... WARRENSBURG, MO - Ordinarily, college students seem to be experts on partying.

But the University of Central Missouri has put out a guide to help during those times when off-campus bashes can get out of hand.

The “House Party Guide,” put together by students, faculty and Warrensburg police, offers tips on how students can avoid throwing a party that could get them in trouble.

Warrensburg isn’t the only college town in the area with an off-campus partying problem. Police in those towns say that most off-campus house parties involve alcohol and that monitoring underage drinking at those parties is a challenge ...

AM, Mon 12th May - University renting - the way ahead
Don't be scared off by images of the Young Ones, Emma Tyrrell finds landords who do their homework can still gain healthy yields from student lets.
LandlordExpert - 12 May 2008
... UK - Thoughts of the average student house probably conjure up images of beer stains, unemptied bins, and last summer's barbecue buried in the jungle of the back garden. Not the ideal tenants, you might think. But for landlords who overcome such prejudices, the student rental market may be attractive.

With student numbers forecast to climb from 2.36 million to 3 million by 2014, and 40 per cent living in accommodation rented from private landlords, demand in most areas is strong ...

Some commuters prefer pedaling to work
Star - 11 May 2008
... ROCKFORD, IL - McIntyre bikes 3½ miles each day to work in 15 to 20 minutes, versus 10 minutes to drive, park and walk to his office. Rockford is behind big university cities (Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago), he says, but it’s ahead of comparable cities, such as Peoria or Bloomington.

“For me, it’s somewhat simple because I live in such proximity to work,” he said.
“You’ve got to incorporate it into your overall lifestyle. Do it once or twice a week and gradually you work your way into it.” ...
