Phillips County, Ark., was the scene of vigilante killings and a crooked legal system that left hundreds of blacks dead or jailed in 1919.

When Kelley was young, few blacks owned land, had political power or talked about 1919. But the man who raised Kelley was determined that his nephew lead a different life and put him on a path that led to a mostly white college town in Upstate New York ...
