"Like individual human beings, landscapes and civilizations display distinctive characteristics. While they change in the course of time they retain a uniqueness derived in large part from the set of conditions under which they emerged and also from the factors which influenced their subsequent evolution. The phrases "genius loci" and "spirit of place" symbolize the forces or structures generally hidden beneath the surface of things which determine the uniqueness of each place."

Condos
to feature 'new urbanism' design
Oxford Press - 8 Dec 2007
... OXFORD, OH - Running deeply through the entire proposal is the concept
of "new urbanism," a return to a more historical type of town
planning seen Uptown and in Stuart Square. By pushing buildings closer to
roads, placing garages behind the condos and porches on the front, Webb
hopes to create neighborhoods with a real sense of community rather than
churning out typical subdivisions.
"We really hope it feels more like the Mile Square than a subdivision," Webb said. "New urbanism is a growing trend in architecture, moving toward sort of a European style."

outstanding construction project in college town. David and Steve Beers
got a "Pride of Ownership Award" for their design and construction
of this apartment building.
The building one of the first of its kind in the Ithaca city limits. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but its energy efficient because it's made of insulated concrete. It cost a lot more money upfront but the Beers' hope it will even out on smaller energy bill. Each apartment is equipped with brand new stainless steel appliances. The Beers say they used the property's history as inspiration ...

Students
reach agreement over West Campus taxes
Daily Texan - 7 Dec 2007
... AUSTIN, TX - Because of West Campus zoning changes, which allow developers
to construct much larger buildings and increase the density of living in
the area, property values went up by 313 percent between 2004 and 2006,
said Tim Aynesworth, UT Sigma Chi alum. Therefore, the fraternity and sorority
houses' property taxes essentially tripled.
"Since we are nonprofits, but yet we still pay full property taxes, what we were having to do is pass the increased taxes onto the residents, which is a huge burden, and the students pay for that," ...

Fire
education still difficult despite deaths
Diamondback - 7 Dec 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - Fire prevention has always been among the greatest
safety concerns for college administrators, but after millions of dollars
spent on sprinkler upgrades and installing fire safety features in housing,
educating students about fire risks may remain the hardest part.
It's a strange irony, considering the constant cycle of teaching and learning that takes place here. But even with two fatal fires in off-campus housing during the past two years, officials say efforts at ratcheting up fire safety education have still largely gone unnoticed ...

Who
Says College Students Shouldn't Vote Where They Live?
OpEdNews - 6 Dec 2007

Yale Daily News - 6 Dec 2007
... NEW HAVEN, CT - The neighborhood surrounding the cemetery currently

Student

Georgetown Voice - 6 Dec 2007
... WASHINGTON, DC - Home is where the vote is. And though not all college
students think of their colleges as home, we do spend about nine months
of the year at school—more than enough time to become part of the
surrounding area’s civic life. But in the last few days, Senator Hillary

has ignored this reality by telling out-of-state college students who go

Students must pay attention to how Penn's retail choices affect
prices - and development - in the area
Pennsylvanian - 5 Dec 2007
... PHILADELPHIA, PA - By cultivating an upscale retail monoculture on campus,
the University is gouging students to gild its own coffers. Penn alum Matt
Ruben, who graduated last year with a doctorate in Urban Studies, examines
this trend in Campus, Inc.: Corporate Power in the Ivory Tower. According
to Ruben, universities can strike business deals to milk profits from their
"captive audience" of students, faculty, and staff.
Here's how it works: the University leases land or space to a business. Penn tries to squeeze as much money as possible out of the deal by charging higher rents. These high rents get passed on to the consumer - that means you - through higher prices ...
New
city housing to ease crisis for students
Diamondback - 5 Dec 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - There are 1,000 beds for students on Route 1 - all
of them in the University View. But if three recent building proposals come
off, that number could more than triple.
Between the 2,600 beds developers have already proposed building this semester and five other potential student-housing projects in early stages, developers seem to be betting that the need for student housing won't dry up anytime soon and that the private sector - not the university - will fill the demand.
"[Developers] are banking on the fact that they're gonna get their housing done before the university starts their process," said David Daddio, a former city council candidate who writes a blog about development issues in the city, Rethink College Park ...

a bonafide effort to rejuvenate the city's historic center and it will be

University and college towns are becoming attractive alternatives for those in business who sense malls and strip shopping centers have become overly prevalent and in some cases boring. The plan divides the area into five sections.
The section between Mesa State College and the Lincoln Park Golf Course would have student housing, a hotel to serve the college and places for after- 5 p.m. entertainment.
