"Like individual human beings, landscapes and civilizations display distinctive characteristics. While they change in the course of time they retain a uniqueness derived in large part from the set of conditions under which they emerged and also from the factors which influenced their subsequent evolution. The phrases "genius loci" and "spirit of place" symbolize the forces or structures generally hidden beneath the surface of things which determine the uniqueness of each place."

Has the student housing bubble burst for town?
Echo - 20 Oct 2007
... TREFOREST, UK - THE RISING cost of student life is biting hard on the economy of a South Wales university town, with scores of rented houses empty or up for sale.

At least 160 student houses owned by local landlords are still on the rental market one month into the new term.

Terraced streets in Treforest, which for more than 20 years have been packed with students, are now filled with To Let and For Sale signs, as students opt to study at a university nearer home, or are moving to Cardiff to live in purpose-built halls of residence ...

Downtown block eyed for retail, apartments

Beacon Journal - 20 Oct 2007
... AKRON, OH - A developer has set his sights on a prime downtown Akron block to bring a retail and apartment complex marketed to college students.

And as expected, the project means the historic Howe House that sits in its blue glory at the corner of High and Exchange streets will be moved from the spot it has occupied since 1836 ...

Former AU Dorm Evolves Into Luxury Housing
Post 20 Oct 2007
... BETHESDA. MD - The Park Bethesda apartments marked a sort of graduation this summer: The building, which used to be essentially an American University dorm, is now a luxury rental complex open to anyone ...

"The culture has to change because you've gone from all student housing to all public," said property manager Ryan Herb, who works for Riverstone Residential Group, the Rockville management company that has handled the year-long transition from university control. "Pretty much, it was a dorm and run like a dorm prior to us coming here." ...

Ellensburg downtown can become vibrant again
Daily Record - 20 Oct 2007
... ELLENSBURG, WA - To the Editor

My wife and I are contributors to the Citizens for Future Ellensburg campaign. We support John Perrie, Ed Barry, Bruce Tabb and Jim Huckabay to fill the city council seats in this upcoming election.

Ellensburg is at a turning point. We are the cultural, educational and economic center for Kittitas County. Ellensburg, as well as the entire county, is growing more rapidly than any time in the last 60 years, yet our city does not have the funds to properly support the city services we all expect. We do not have an industrial base to support good family wages. If you are not employed by Central Washington University, or a governmental organization, good private sector jobs are not plentiful.

There are many people who have a stake in what happens to Ellensburg beside those of us who live within the city limits and can vote for council members. Those who live in the county but own city property, or work, or have businesses in town, also have a stake in this election. Upper County residents who consider Ellensburg their center for some important services also have an interest in the election results ...

High-tech takeout

Before Iowa City bar vote, a 'vomit walk'
At issue is whether the college town should allow 19- and 20-year-olds into drinking establishments.
Register - 20 Oct 2007
... IOWA City, IA - An Iowa City activist has organized what he calls a "vomit walk" for Sunday morning to draw attention to the Nov. 6 public referendum on raising Iowa City's bar entry age to 21.

Organizer Gary Sanders, who supports the higher age requirement, said "there are many people who will not come downtown on Thursday through Saturday nights because everybody knows those are students-getting-drunk nights. We need to take back our downtown." ...

Buying college student a home can save costs
Cheaper to invest than pay dorms
Post-Intelligencer - 20 Oct 2007
... SEATTLE, WA - Things to check off as your teenager heads off to college: Don't forget to: a) pay the tuition, b) have the safe-sex talk, c) have the drinking-and-driving talk, and d) buy your student a house or condo.

Pardon the whiplash on that last one, but the fact is, many parents are investing in real estate close to campus for their college-bound offspring. Oftentimes, it's preferable to shelling out dormitory fees or apartment rent ...

Greek history: Homes tour provides a glimpse into contemporary fraternity and sorority life
State Journal - 19 Oct 2007
... MADISON, WI - Long before John Belushi gave us Bluto, fraternities were as far as it gets from beer bongs and food fights. The world's first fraternities were formed in the 18th and early 19th centuries as literary societies where students could discuss scholarly matters and debate. Their knowledge of Greek language and mythology led them to ways of distinguishing their groups.

This weekend, 150 years of Greek life at UW-Madison will be celebrated with a Parade of Homes: Guided Tours of Fraternity and Sorority Chapter Homes on Sunday. For the first time ever, even non-Greek members of the public are invited to enter the normally secretive sanctums ...

Northfield: So much more than a college town
Star-Tribune - 19 Oct 2007
... NORTHFIELD, MN - Northfield claims two colleges, Carleton and St. Olaf, so the laid-back, bohemian ambience came as no surprise. What did strike me was the grown-up feel of the place. Sure, a kid in dreadlocks served tea at the coffee shop. But a collection of mothers grabbed lunch at a deli with their crew of toddlers. A woman carrying a Coach bag browsed an upscale art gallery. A matronly woman bought white bread and doughnuts at an old-school bakery.

That the college crowd shares the streets so amiably with townies not only adds to Northfield's appeal, it speaks volumes about it. No matter your type, something will grab you among the pretty parks, many restaurants and eclectic stores (not a chain among them) that hug the Cannon River ...

Daily Sun - 19 Oct 2007
... ITHACA, NY - On Oct. 6, President David J. Skorton announced at a meeting with community leaders that Cornell will invest $20 million in the Ithaca and Tompkins County communities over the next ten years.

Historical status could keep students from West Side

The naming comes after efforts made by the West Side Neighborhood Association of Binghamton — a group of residents dedicated to preserving the neighborhood’s standard of living and to the reestablishment of the “historically family-centered character of the West Side,” according to the organization’s Web site ...

Purchases of condos continue
But sales slow amid football team's woes
Observer - 19 Oct 2007
... SOUTH BEND, IN - Condominiums, townhouses and hotel-condos have been sprouting up around Notre Dame, collectively feeding an investment of more than $200 million to the South Bend community, according to the South Bend Tribune. But a dismal football season and a stagnant housing market have caused some developers to scale back their plans around Notre Dame ...

Court rules for city in Uptown Oxford Wendy's case
Oxford Press - 19 Oct 2007
... OXFORD, OH - "Associated Student Government has come forward to note how it's impacting students in a negative way," he said. "Visitors who were here for homecoming voiced concern to me and long-term residents have ongoing concerns about the commercial viability of our Uptown area." ...

The lot in question, located at 2 S. Main Street, housed a Wendy's restaurant until an August 2005 fire closed it down. Following the fire, Main and High planned to split the location into four different lots, erecting one dozen apartments above the combined commercial space. The lots would have each been 2,100 square feet — placing them 900 square feet below the city's 3,000 square foot requirement ...

City requires action on Wendy's structure
Within 24 months, former restaurant must be modified
Miami Student - 12 Oct 2007
... OXFORD, OH - ASG unanimously approved a resolution to send a letter on behalf of all Miami University students to Matthew and Chris Rodbro-mangers of the property and of Red Brick, Inc. Property Management to "expedite the demolition and subsequent redevelopment of the property."

ASG's Secretary for Off-Campus Affairs Jen House said that the judge's ruling and actions by ASG are "a step in the right direction" toward redevelopment. House also added that Conley's announcement showed an uncommon partnership between city council and Miami students ...

Uptown eyesore should be rebuilt immediately
Miami Student - 12 Oct 2007
... OXFORD, OH - Matt Rodbro's claim ASG has been misinformed about the facts surrounding the property but their unwillingness to share many facts casts considerable doubt on such a claim. If Matt Rodbro is serious about wanting to clear up these supposed misperceptions, then he should take up Mike Scott's offer and sit down with an ASG representative to establish a clear channel of communication-which has been missing in this storied affair all along. The property should be redeveloped in accordance with current city ordinances and then perhaps added to or reconfigured if the Charter Amendment is eventually passed. Waiting for possible ordinances to pass while the property becomes ever more cumbersome to the community is not a viable option. The litigation process has seemed endless as well and the decision comes with a clear concern.

Two more years of looking at a burnt-out Wendy's seems like even more time for the property to rot needlessly. Hopefully the finality of the court's decision will bring haste to the situation and bring an end to an eyesore no one care cares to see. Oxford simply deserves better ...

Dealing with incompetence
Diamondback - 18 Oct 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - As if the first housing crunch was not outrageous enough, this second one comes just as we are starting to learn more about how ineffective the city of College Park has been at enforcing fire and safety codes. On the one hand, you've got a university that is more concerned about upping its enrollment and statistics with no concern for students who rely on on-campus housing, and, on the other hand, you've got a city government unable to grasp the importance of safe, affordable housing. ...

Pektor plans 71 homes at silk mill

Morning Call - 18 Oct 2007
... BETHLEHEM, PA - City officials are looking forward to 71 new homes just four blocks from the heart of the historic downtown.

Is Angwin rural, or is it a college town?
Register - 18 Oct 2007
... ANGWIN, CA - The recent debate about Angwin development within the urban bubble has been spearheaded by a group that claims that Angwin is rural and needs to be preserved as such.

I would contend that Angwin is in fact not rural and instead should be considered a “college town” similar to many such towns which have grown up around an educational institution in an agricultural setting ...

Diamondback - 17 Oct 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - A 700-bed student housing development, once destined to be a hotel, could be built on Route 1 as soon as 2009.

Local developer Mark Vogel last night presented the city council plans for the still unnamed development, which may also include a bank, coffee shop and restaurant. Located on the site now occupied by Jerry's Subs and an abandoned lot, the building is the third major student housing project proposed to the city in the last six months ...

Diamondback - 17 Oct 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - State Sen. Jim Rosapepe blasted university administrators at a campus meeting yesterday for their inaction to curb the housing shortage, saying the university should act quickly to add thousands rather than just hundreds of beds.

Syracuse Common Council finds way to limit off-campus housing
Daily Orange - 17 Oct 2007
... SYRACUSE, NY - A new parking ordinance passed Oct. 9 by the Syracuse Common Council forbids landlords from putting new property up for rent in the university-area neighborhood unless it has at least one parking spot per bedroom. It follows on the heels of an ordinance last year that would have limited the number of unrelated adults per dwelling from five to three, a measure that failed due to fear of lawsuits from landlords in the area. So the Council decided to take a different approach by keeping the number of off-campus students where it is now instead of drastically reducing it.

With the limited space in the neighborhood surrounding the university, it will be nearly impossible for a landlord to meet the requirements of the new ordinance ...

Students urged to cool partying
Free Press - 17 Oct 2007
... LONDON, ON - An off-campus code of conduct -- not more police -- is what's need to curb rowdy students, says London's deputy police chief.

Kent wants to be top college town Hasn't made national lists, but officials believe absence won't last
Record-Courier - 16 Oct 2007
... KENT, OH - David Creamer, senior vice president for administration at Kent State University, cautioned when making such comparisons. In an e-mail, Creamer said comparing Kent to communities such as Athens, Oxford and Bowling Green are fair, but a comparison of Kent to Columbus and Cincinnati is uneven.

"I don't see the absence of Kent from these lists as a problem but as an opportunity," Creamer said. "We need to be working on ways to not only add (Kent) to the lists ... but to lists like the best places to live and work in Ohio and the U.S." ...

“We’re trying to set a precedent,” said project co-ordinator Dayna Lafferty, MA ’09. “We want to bridge the gap between the students and the community. We want to make sure that people know that students can be socially aware.” The project was organized by Green Scheme, a group created in the summer of 2006 with the dual mandate to encourage and bring awareness to environmental issues while helping to foster positive town-gown relations, said project co-ordinator Kelsey Jensen, ArtSci ’08 ...

EDITORIAL: Starkville's example
Daily Journal - 16 Oct 1007
... STARKVILLE, MS - The passage last week of a $26.5 million school bond issue in Starkville was the latest example of the far-sighted vision for public education in Northeast Mississippi.

People in this region historically have recognized the direct connection between the quality of public schools and the economic success and social cohesiveness of their communities. Strong public schools require broad public support and enrollment, high expectations and a willingness by the community to invest in the future ...

... HELSINKI, FI - An increasingly small proportion of students at Helsinki University are able to live in apartments rented on the open market, reports a survey on penny-pinching carried out for the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY).

Students are now unable to compete in the wild and unregulated rentals market - at least not in the Greater Helsinki area ...

Hundreds of sophomores won't get housing
Diamondback - 16 Oct 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - At least 386 randomly selected sophomores will be denied on-campus housing next year, Resident Life officials said.

Following a last-minute housing crisis that left 639 juniors and seniors out of dorms 45 days before exams last year and the emergence of the longest wait-list since 1980 this fall, Director of Resident Life Deb Grandner said she planned to notify students in an e-mail sent today to those living on the campus that many would join the cast-off ranks.

If trends continue to follow the department's predictions, Grandner said 556 sophomores would most likely be denied from dorm housing next year. In the worst-case scenario 1,003 sophomores would not receive on-campus housing ...

Rental fees on agenda for Carbondale council
The Southern - 16 Oct 2007
... CARBONDALE - As City Council members consider a proposed $35 annual inspection fee on rental dwellings, officials in a handful of college towns across the state are considering similar measures.

Universities are a part of the fabric of each of these communities. But a consequence of this, many officials said, is dumpy and often unsafe housing aimed at students looking to live on the cheap ...

Landlords Say City Rent Ceiling Increase Too Small
Daily Californian - 16 Oct 2007
... BERKELEY, CA - The Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board voted last night to increase rent ceilings in the city by 2.2 percent, a rate that some landlords say is inadequate to offset their costs.

A city law passed by voters in 2004 calls for an annual rent ceiling increase based on inflation rates. The change will affect 30,000 tenants protected by rent control laws in the city ...

Elderly, not students, shall inherit Earth
Badger Herald - 16 Oct 2007
... MADISON, WI - We all came to this university — I hope — with the goal of expanding our horizons, learning what this world has to offer and other fluffy stuff like that. Yet, there are certain realities our education leaves us unprepared to deal with. It is curious that the closest thing most students have to an intergenerational relationship — outside of their own families, that is — is a quick chat with a professor after class, or maybe a professional understanding with a boss or co-worker. When we leave Madison for good — and the vast majority of us will — we would be wise to direct our energy and innovation toward serving retirees and other older Americans. We need to appreciate them on a personal level and follow their lead on a political and financial level. This is where our economy is headed, especially since trends like outsourcing and overseas manufacturing have become widespread ...

LU students could become potent force in citywide elections
Champion - 16 Oct 2007
... LYNCHBURG, VA - Several weeks before his death, the Rev. Jerry Falwell was determined to close the gap between Lynchburg's Ward III and two other city voting wards by encouraging Liberty University students to register to vote in local elections.

"We have never registered our students," Falwell said in an April interview. "So therefore, we are at the mercy of other wards. We want fair and equal representation. We want Ward III to have equal footing with all the rest of the wards. Just in recent weeks it's gotten to the top of our list." ...

Faculty hears comments on Brackenridge
Daily Texan - 15 Oct 2007
... AUSTIN, TX - The report gave the history and breakdown of the 345-acre, UT-owned plot that sits west of Mopac Boulevard on the banks of Lady Bird Lake. The use of the land has been debated since it was donated for educational purposes to the University in 1910 by Col. George Brackenridge.

The report said the 74 acres of land used for affordable graduate student housing was not "the highest and best use" of the land and that it was unclear whether the size and location of the Brackenridge Field Lab, a major research location for the College of Natural Sciences, was necessary ...

Don't forget origins of 'College Hill'
Daily Evergreen - 15 Oct 2007
... PULLMAN, WA - Pullman is a college town. Accordingly, there are usually large numbers of students in Pullman, many of whom choose to live here. Owing to its proximity to the campus, College Hill is an attractive location for students to live. And while there are many leaders both from Pullman and WSU who do their best to plan and develop the neighborhood for the benefit of students and permanent residents alike, the latest public forum highlighted some issues that need to be resolved before planning can continue.

Perhaps the largest area of contention concerns the population density for the College Hill neighborhood. While there are many students and university officials who wish to see apartments or similarly high-density dwellings be put in place, they’re encountering opposition from some residents ...

Borough should consider rezoning
Collegian - 15 Oct 2007
... STATE COLLEGE, PA - By not rezoning the block, a decision which the council is expected to confirm at a meeting this evening, HFL cannot follow through on its intention for buying the building in the first place -- to turn it a 250-resident student apartment building.

The decision speaks to a larger trend within the Ccouncil that seeks to discourage the construction of more downtown student housing ...

Real estate firms go back to school
Buildings near campus offer new course for growth
Tribune - 15 Oct 2007
... USA - Four years ago, Gaffen discovered an opportunity in student housing near large campuses like Purdue University, where apartments in walk-to locations were in short supply. A little research confirmed that with the so-called echo boom heading off to college in record numbers, demand for student housing was growing faster than many universities could accommodate, she said.

By acting quickly on real estate opportunities in college towns, Northbrook-based Prime Property Investors Ltd. has created a thriving niche business. The 14-year-old firm's revenue hit $21.7 million in 2006, up eightfold from 2003, landing it on the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies ...

Town And Gown: Philadelphia's Success Story
Courant - 14 Oct 2007
... PHILADELPHIA PA - Over the past decade, several colleges - including Trinity and Yale - have made substantial efforts to improve their urban neighborhoods. Judith Rodin has literally written the book on this topic. "The University & Urban Revival," based on her experience as president of the University of Pennsylvania, ought to be required reading for community organizers, city and regional leaders, business executives and educational administrators in Connecticut's capital region.

It well describes urban reality and what we might effectively do - step by step - to improve it. Indeed, nearly every suggestion you've read in the Place pages has been put into practice in the Philadelphia neighborhood Rodin succinctly recalls in her nine-chapter book. Unfortunately but not surprisingly, violent crime served as the impetus for revitalization efforts. Rodin, who became university president at the height of a crime spree, approached the situation in a new way ...

Small-town feel belies the huge campus next door
Record - 14 Oct 2007
... STATE COLLEGE, PA - Often noted for its low-stress lifestyle, Happy Valley -- as the town is known to locals -- has rich culture, natural beauty and a youthful edge. And despite its somewhat small size (year-round population 38,720 [university enrollment 45,000]), the borough has attracted some big-time attention over the last couple of years: It made Kiplinger's Personal Finance list of "Smart Places to Live"; was named one of the "Best Smaller Metro Areas to Start a Career or Business" by Forbes; and U.S. News & World Report rated it one of the nation's "Best Places to Retire." The town also recently received an honorable mention as one of the country's "Best Music Scenes" in Rolling Stone magazine ...

Florida Gator fans find their Place in Gainesville
Sun - 14 Oct 2007
... GAINESVILLE, FL - The owners of the former Newberry Inn have an answer for those special event weekends like football games when hotel rooms can be hard to find: Buy a hotel condominium for a guaranteed place to stay and let the hotel rent your room when you don't.

Keystone Gator Hotel Campus LLLP - led by retail, hotel and condo developer Jay Schwartz of Aventura - renamed the hotel The Place and began marketing it heavily when football season began as a home for University of Florida alumni and fans to gather on game-day weekends, complete with an onsite tailgate party and shuttle to the stadium ...

UWT to property owner: Drop dead
News-Tribune - 14 Oct 2007
... TACOMA, WA - The University of Washington Tacoma doesn’t have any money to buy the remaining privately owned properties within the 40-acre square identified for its full, future hillside campus.

Instead, the university has adopted an if-you-can’t-buy-it-block-it strategy that raises questions about how far government should go to prevent development of property it can’t afford to buy ...

Big Boozers
Douglas County ranks No. 1 in state for alcoholic beverage sales
Journal-World - 14 Oct 2007
... LAWRENCE, KS - “Affluence maybe has something to do with it,” Jensen said. “We have a large percentage of students from Johnson County and from the Chicago area. They may be slightly more affluent than some of the students in other university towns.”

That affluence could mean a couple of different things, he said. It could mean that students just have the means to buy more booze, or it may mean that they’re just buying more expensive brands of booze, which would push the tax collections higher ...

Strife of the party: Rowan, Glassboro try to curb drinking at Beau Rivage
Times - 14 Oct 2007
... GLASSBORO, NJ - It's Rowan University's worst-kept secret, a narrow stretch of off-campus student housing in Glassboro where as little as $5 guarantees all the beer you can drink and age is the last thing on anyone's mind.

For years, Beau Rivage a patchwork of privately owned townhomes directly across the street from Rowan's western border has been known as the place for underclassmen to party on Thursday nights and a problem spot for university and borough officials ...

After UK victory, rush from stands, party hits streets
Herald-Leader - 14 Oct 2007
... LEXINGTON, KY - Then came someone with a bottle of charcoal lighter fluid. A few squirts created a roaring flame. Then the whole bottle was thrown in. Then another couch.

There were, by this time, a few hundred students gathered around the huge fire.

A dark blue 1998 Saturn parked closest to the couches started smoking, then the paint on the front and back driver's-side doors crinkled and melted ...
