Building
dorms for students: no-win deal for businesses
VietNamNet - 8 Sep 2007
... VIETNAM – Though the Education Ministry is trying hard to keep
up with students’ great demands for dorms, few private units are
willing to invest in the area because of likely losses.
In Hanoi, for instance, since 2001, there have only been two private
dormitory projects: Hacinco Student Village in Thanh Xuan district and
Thang Long Dormitory in Cau Giay district.
And even these aren’t reserved exclusively for students. Thang
Long was first aimed to provide rooms for 2,800 students. Yet, at the
moment, a great part of it is being leased to families. And a major reason
is that leasing rooms to students isn’t profitable.
Georgetown
Students Bristle At New Restrictions on Parties
Post - 8 Sep 2007
...GEORGETOWN, DC - Georgetown University is cracking down on drinking
and parties in college-owned housing, with new crowd limits and registration
requirements. Students are rattled, and some neighbors are angry that
parties are winding up in their back yards.
In addition, the D.C. police commander for the district that includes
the school said officers will be arresting students for party-related
violations from now on, rather than issuing citations. The first two weeks
of this school year have brought more complaints from neighbors about
rowdy parties than he has ever seen ...

Daily News - 8 Sep 2007
... ORONO, ME - Save for a brief interlude in Bangor, I’ve lived
in Orono so long, I’m starting to feel like a townie.
I grumble about the traffic when the students return
to UMaine in the fall. Never mind that I was one of those students not
too long ago. I’ve been known to run outside, screaming, in pajamas,
at the sound of beer bottle hitting pavement. And I’m not making
dinner plans until October break.
But I chose to live in a college town, and since the students are back,
I’d like to welcome them not by complaining, but by letting them
in on some of my favorite downtown retail spots. Besides, today is Orono
Festival Day, and what better way to celebrate my adopted hometown than
to shop locally? ...

Cornell
Pitches In to Improve Collegetown
Daily Sun - 7 Sep 2007
... ITHACA, NY - The city of Ithaca contributed $75,000 to an urban design
study at the Ithaca Common Council meeting Wednesday evening, the first
time the city has donated funds to the Collegetown area in a number of
years. Cornell collaborated with the city by agreeing to match the donation
— dollar for dollar — totaling $150,000 towards the improvement
of Collegetown.
The newest resolution is the latest step in what has been an ongoing
process to study and recommend improvements for the future development
of Collegetown as outlined by the Collegetown Vision Statement, which
was presented to the Common Council in February 2006. The statement described
how the community envisioned Collegetown in 20 years. The council also
established a task force to help manage the project ...

Classes Resume, Mini-Dorm Fight Continues
VoiceOfSanDiego - 7 Sep 2007
... SAN DIEGO, CA - Friday, Sept. 7, 2007 | Fall classes began last week
for 35,000 students at San Diego State University. And as those students
returned to classes, they returned to a roiling debate over their place
as tenants in the neighborhood.
The fight continues for scores of university neighborhood residents and
activists rallying against what they call mini-dorms -- usually houses
holding a half-dozen to 10 students and their accompanying noise, trash
and cars ...

Chieftan - 7 Sep 2007
... BUEBLO, CO - In the meantime, officials will seek proposals from private

scope of the work needed for a public-private partnership.
University officials also are working with a financial consultant on

HIGH-PROFILE PROJECTS HELPED SPARK BIG CHANGES
Herald-Leader - 5 Sep 2007
... LEXINGTON, KY - A combination of factors has fueled the renaissance:
young professionals and couples without children looking to move from
the suburbs to the city, some reasonably-priced property and several high-profile
developments that have acted as catalysts.
In February, 2002, the city and the University of Kentucky agreed to
put up $200,000 for a College-Town Plan to study ways to revitalize the
area between downtown and UK. South Hill occupies part of that area. The
goal of the plan was to create a physical and financial bridge between
the university, with its thousands of students, and downtown merchants,

Last weekend, two off-duty troopers hired to patrol the complex were

Disenfranchisement
dilemma
The Flat Hat - 4 Sep 2007
... WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Before 2004, any student of the College could register
to vote in Williamsburg elections. This is the norm for Virginia college
towns, and it is easy to see why. As College President Gene Nichol wrote
in a March 2006 e-mail to students, “This community will be your
home for four years or more. It is your present center of focus and engagement
… You are full members of this community — entitled to equal
rights of political participation.”
It began with the city’s voter registrar requiring students to
fill out a long and complicated questionnaire to register. The results
spoke plainly to the new policy’s purpose: fewer than 15 students
gained the right to vote out of hundreds of applicants. But our students,
as Jefferson’s record will attest, are tenacious when it comes to
securing our right to representation, and we did not give up ...

This is Chico: Attachment to dingbat housing may just be weird
Enterprise - 3 Sep 2007
... CHICO, CA - Chico, unfortunately, has lots of dingbat-infested neighborhoods,
especially in the blocks surrounding the Chico State University campus.
Almost providentially, the dingbat made its first appearance just at the
time the Chico State student population started to explode.
Given the rising demand for student housing, coupled with the mid-20th
century lack of concern about good design and neighborhood preservation,
the Chico dingbat was inevitable.
What's surprising is that the entire south campus area wasn't leveled
and turned into a dingbatland. Chico's oldest neighborhood is remarkably
intact, considering the pressure it's been under to provide the lion's
share of housing for thousands of students every year ...

Task
force works with city to keep Central safe
Herald - 3 Sep 2007
... NEW BRITAIN, CT - In the Fall of 2006, New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart
and CCSU President Jack Miller organized a public forum to discuss issues
that impact both the city of New Britain and the campus community. As
a result of this well-attended public forum, the Town and Gown Task Force
was established. This task force is composed of New Britain residents,
Stewart, New Britain police, and CCSU students and staff, including police,
faculty and administrators.
Some of the areas that are currently being addressed by the task force
include: the prevention of underage drinking, noise and parking concerns
generated by off-campus house parties, enhancing the overall quality of
life for neighbors and students, creating educational opportunities for
students that focus on civic engagement and civic responsibility, fostering
positive relations between students and neighbors, and enhancing security
and a sense of pride in the neighborhood.
I am very optimistic and enthusiastic about the direction in which the
task force is heading. The Town and Gown Task Force has convened five
meetings to date. Some of our accomplishments include: an ongoing dialogue
through regular monthly task force meetings, a proposed city ordinance
that will establish a landlord (dwelling) registration and "approved
housing list" for students considering off-campus house/apartment
rentals, enhancing communication between the university and off-campus
students, and providing information about state and city laws and ordinances
to CCSU students ...

Robesonian - 3 Sep 2007
... PEMBROKE, NC - when Swiney talked with students, he quickly discovered
that for many, especially the freshmen, the prospect of living off-campus

“A lot of students want to live on campus,” he said. “I
think a lot of it is due to the proximity to their classes, the cost factor
and the length of the housing agreement. Students said they are OK with

Living off campus is not cheap. Rent for a year at Pembroke Place will

Student
property: Steep learning curve
More students are now opting to buy their own homes but it's
a hefty responsibility. Is it worth it?
Telegraph - 1 Sep 2007
... UK - It is landlords, not lecturers, who turn a student's pint of
Stella sour. Most students would rather hand in a 3,000-word essay than
a month's rent - and the breakages assessment at the end of the academic

such as Bristol and Edinburgh, students often pay more rent than young
professionals, yet are prepared to live in grottier conditions and less
prestigious areas. "Landlords can exploit you financially and always
