MIXED REACTION TO ARBORETUM STUDENT FLATS
Evening Post - 11 Aug 2007
... NOTTINGHAM, UK - The proposal is to knock down an existing warehouse.

An adjacent Georgian house would be incorporated into the design.

The new building would range from three storeys to five.

In line with new rules introduced by the city council, the building must generate ten per cent of its energy needs from renewable sources and the applicant has proposed using solar panels to heat water.

In addition, the developer has said the proximity to the city centre means "the use of the private car is not essential" and "the proposed operators are agreeable to restrictions on car ownership being applied to residents" ...

In its application, the firm states: "The introduction of new student accommodation will contribute to physical regeneration through the removal of vacant buildings and the provision of new high quality buildings, and economic regeneration by injecting additional expenditure from residents to support local businesses." ...

Who can live together? The court got it right
Register - 11 Aug 2007
... AMES, IA - Disgruntled landlords who had been renting illegally for years sued the city: They lost. The landlords then took this case to the Iowa Supreme Court.

Now, four years later (the wheels of justice do grind exceedingly slowly), the Iowa Supreme Court supported restricted zoning. So why did the normally savvy editorial board of the Des Moines Register not get it that this is a good thing?

Ames lacks affordable housing. Many working-class people - the secretaries and maintenance people at the university, beauticians and clerks - cannot afford to buy homes in Ames. If more rentals went back to owner-occupancy, there would be more affordable housing. Support of this zoning ordinance can help make this possible.

Luckily, the majority opinion of the court got it entirely right. Restrictive zoning may be some protection from annoying "animal house" neighbors, but more important, the support of low-density zoning is about saving these fragile neighborhoods ...

Fighting fire
University makes fire safety a priority in resident hall training
Press-Citizen - 11 Aug 2007
... IOWA CITY, IA - More than 150 people gathered behind the University of Iowa dormitory for the second annual fire academy for resident assistants, or RA's. UI has more than 120 RAs in its 10 dorms across campus.

The purpose of the academy is two-fold, Jensen said. First, to spread fire safety education throughout the student body, and second, to give students tools for safety when they live off campus.

"That is where the greatest risk for fire and death is," Jensen said, noting that off campus housing is less likely to have sprinkler systems or adult supervision that might help with fire prevention ...

1-800-Got-Junk quickly opens second area site
Business Journal - 11 Aug 2007
... OSWEGO, NY - Dee Johnson was a corporate attorney for 32 years before deciding to trade corporate life for junk. She bought her franchise, covering Onondaga and Oswego counties, in February of this year ...

While in Oswego working on the project, Johnson decided to research the feasibility of opening a physical presence in Oswego. She was told by the Historic Neighborhood that Oswego, like other college towns, has a transient population. Additionally, there is no municipal trash pickup, only three county solid-waste sites, and disposal is arranged by private contractors. Although 1-800-Get-Junk is not a trash hauler, it could easily fulfill the other “junk” needs of the town’s population such as cleaning out cellars, garages, or entire homes. On the commercial side, it can handle entire buildings and other sites as requested ...

New Specialty Computer Store Enjoys College-Town Success
PR.com - 11 Aug 2007
... ATHENS, GA - A new trend in the real estate industry involves catering to the evolving dynamics of university towns by recognizing the buying power and diverse tastes of both college-town residents and students. The Markets at Epps Bridge is an innovative shopping center developed by Athens-based The Dovetail Companies – a group that specializes in college-town real estate. PeachMac, among others, has already contributed to and benefited from the development’s set-up as a diverse retail destination. Dovetail's leasing agent for The Markets, Bryan Austin, explains, “Offering a dynamic tenant mix of both national and neighborhood retailers and restaurants is crucial to both individual tenant success and to creating a varied shopping experience that benefits everyone.” Austin said that Dovetail will be carrying this concept to new college markets including College Station, Texas in 2008. Some Epps Bridge tenants may be opening second locations at other Dovetail developments like The Markets at Anderson (SC) serving Clemson University; The Markets at Cedar Ridge in Charlotte, NC and The Markets at Sugarloaf in Lawrenceville, GA. ...

KU sports are costly unifying factor for Lawrence residents
Journal-World - 11 Aug 2007
... LAWRENCE, KS - Lawrence needs to get more civil, more united, on more things other than KU basketball. Lawrence needs more people with a vision for the future and what needs to be done to help make it a better city, a leader in many fields, rather than settling for the more comfortable position of being a “follower.”

We know the town is going to grow. We hope increasing numbers of individuals will want to make Lawrence their home. We hope KU will become an even finer university and will continue to attract large numbers of bright, highly motivated young men and women. We hope the university conducts itself in a manner to justify the enthusiastic support of state lawmakers, and we hope the city will have the services and friendly people to make the city highly attractive ...

U.C. Riverside buying 78 homes to lure faculty
Union-Tribune - 10 Aug 2007
... RIVERSIDE, CA - A gated 78-house development is being purchased by the University of California, Riverside, in an effort to lure professors with subsidized housing ...

It's difficult to lure professors to the area because of Southern California's high real estate prices. U.C. Riverside doesn't have land set aside for faculty housing and “that was a strike against us,” campus director of real estate services Lisa Hjulberg said.

Other University of California campuses also have programs offering subsidized housing as an incentive for recruiting new faculty ...

Justice: Oswego college housing ruling was legal
Post-Standard - 10 Aug 2007
... OSWEGO, NY - The town of Oswego's zoning board acted legally when it decided a developer's planned 600-student housing project was not a dormitory, a state Supreme Court justice has ruled.

Without commenting on the zoning board's decision Justice Hugh A. Gilbert ruled, in an opinion handed down Thursday, that the board's decision was legally reached.

Opponents of the project argued that the decision ran against town zoning code, which does not allow dormitories in the proposed project area, a 21-acre site along Johnson Road near the SUNY Oswego campus...

College dorm may be a crowd scene
Daily Times - 10 Aug 2007
... SALISBURY, MD - Overcrowding. Though it might be problem in some colleges, it doesn't seem to be a problem in this area.

Most college students expect to encounter living with one or two roommates in a space just large enough to breath in and maybe to add a few personal belongings. Due to a rising number of college attendees though sometimes colleges and universities can't always meet that expectation ...

Today, census experts expect that there will be more than 21 million college-age people by the year 2010. This means that after nearly two decades of enrollment stagnation or decline, schools have been faced with accommodating a resurgence in student numbers to 1980 levels -- in half the time.

Although the Association of College and University Housing Officers says nobody knows exactly how many schools and students are affected by overcrowding, they say the problem is fairly common ...

What If Your Campus Housing Looked Like This?
Chronicle - Aug 2007
... ITHACA, NY - There is something timeless about the houses in an unusual neighborhood just outside of Ithaca’s tiny downtown. They’re placed close together and sit lightly upon the land, as homes did in early American settlements or medieval villages. But the time-warp feeling one gets at the EcoVillage at Ithaca may have more to do with the fact that the usual trappings of suburban development — multi-car garages; wide, paved streets; vinyl siding — are nowhere to be found. Where there might be driveways in a conventional development, the EcoVillage houses have front-yard gardens of peppermint, basil, and butterfly flowers of all sorts.

Lafayette's historic Freetown faces change
Neighborhood seeks to save storied past
A dvertiser - 10 Aug 2007
... LAFAYETTE, LA - Lafayette's historic Freetown neighborhood is at a crossroads.

After months of community meetings, the first phase of the controversial 142-unit student housing complex The Quarters is almost complete, with about 200 residents expected to move in Saturday and Tuesday. On Stewart Street, the gated apartments, complete with a clubhouse and swimming pool, mark the most significant new construction in the area in several years.

Outside those gates, however, are dozens of residents living in woodframe houses, many of which date back to the 1800s.

Stricter code enforcement is stressed
Daily News - 10 Aug 2007
... ROLLA, MO - “We have about 6,000 rental units in town,” Petersen said. “We’re a college town and that means we’ve got people coming and going. We discussed mandatory rental inspections, but the committee decided against that. It would just become too costly for the city,” Petersen said requiring the hiring of more inspectors.

Instead, the committee, which consisted of three City Council members, landlords and a renter, recommended stricter enforcement of existing ordinances.

“I think the word got out that the city is going to be watching,” Petersen said. “A lot of renters feel if they complain they’ll be evicted. That should not be the case.” ...

Elm Street houses donated to Habitat
The Messenger - 9 Aug 2007
... TROY, AL - AB Troy, a development company owned by Don Allen Development and University Housing Group, has purchased parcels on Elm Street adjacent to the university and has donated the four existing houses to Pike County Habitat for Humanity.

“The land will be used to build new high-end housing designed for students for Troy University,” said Wes Bradley, AB Troy partner. “The time is right with Troy's expanded enrollment to take the university's student housing to the next level. The homes on the land were planned for demolition, so donating them to Habitat for Humanity was the right thing to do.” ...

MU Res. Life Trying to Compete
KOMU - 9 Aug 2007
... COLUMBIA, MO - A grand re-opening celebration today at two MU residence halls was part of a 20-year, $350 million student housing renovation project.

Hatch Hall was built 45 years ago, and recently refurbished at the cost of more than $18 million. Administrators are optimistic about filling the residence.

"Our students are now students of the 21st century and there's a great need for us to appeal to that," said Cathy Scroggs, MU Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs.

However, there are other places students are moving, and they aren't on campus ...

Spain’s Quintessential College Town
Jewish Week - 10 Aug 2007
... SALAMANCA, ES - Regular readers of this column will have probably detected a somewhat academic and cultural bent to my travels. In my spare time, I am in fact working on a doctorate in Spanish literature. Which is why I find myself this month in Salamanca, Spain, seat of one of Europe’s oldest and most storied universities.

Besides being a university town, Salamanca is an energetic city of about 150,000 and a tourist destination. It’s a surprisingly agreeable place to while away a few summer days: while Andalusia in the south swelters in 100 degree heat, Salamanca, in the sun-baked plains north of Madrid, boasts fresh, crisp air without humidity, bright blue skies and mornings cool enough for a sweater ...

Good times available for students not yet legal or just staying sober
Red & Black - 9 Aug 2007
... ATHENS, GA - A distinctive blend of modern culture and sophisticated Southern charm, Athens is a bustling college town that offers endless possibilities for fun.

By day, downtown provides amazing food and shopping and by night, the city comes alive with an abundance of bars and clubs that offer a variety of entertainment.

But let's face it, civic pride aside, Athens can suck for the under-21 crowd. At least for the law-abiding under-21 crowd ...

Brockport eatery famous for food and more
Democrat & Chronicle - 9 Aug 2007
... BROCKPORT, NY - Realizing he'd rather run his own business in a college town than be a college student himself, Jimmy started the restaurant 4½ years ago, at the age of 21. He'd already had a lifetime of experience, as Poppy had spent the last 35 years running six family restaurants throughout the region.

"What makes (Jimmy) unique is that he is very community-oriented. Anyone who comes in for a fundraiser, he helps out," says the elder Zisovski, who now bills himself simply as Jimmy Z's sidekick ...

New restaurant comes to Courthouse Square
Eagle - 7 Aug 2007
... MACOMB, IL - If you’ve walked around Macomb’s downtown Square recently, it’s hard not to notice the delectable images taking over the windows on the Winslow Building, formerly The Secret Garden Tea Room, 2 W. Side Square.

Those images are of the food created at Il Spazio restaurant - yes, the real food. The Kirksville, Mo. restaurant owners are in the middle of transforming the three-floor building.

Il Spazio is a fusion in all forms of the word. The food is a blend of classic dishes tailored to Midwestern tastes ...

Dan Litwiler: Rochester needs livable space, not parking
Post-Bulletin - 7 Aug 2007

Our downtown is slated to become a place where many people will choose to live, one that will attract more top-notch students and talented workers.
... ROCHESTER, NY - Why will people choose to live downtown? For worldwide visitors and local residents alike, the Rochester Downtown Alliance home page describes a downtown that offers diverse and independent retail and dining, beautiful outdoor spaces and a focus on culture, all in a relaxing, welcoming environment. Plus, the downtown experience capitalizes on the area's rich history, metropolitan infrastructure and abundance of local expertise and assets.

Great cities we know -- cities where people live and thrive downtown -- could be described with two cardinal additions: a great walking city, perfect for strolling and exploring, and quality housing and small businesses that prosper with foot traffic in neighborhoods at the heart of the city.

Just go green- it's cool and clean
Alligator - 7 Aug 2007
... GAINESVILLE, FL - UF President Bernie Machen has done a remarkable job serving as an advocate for a green, sustainable campus. Our library won an award for being environmentally friendly.

How cool would it be if our student body adopted this cause as our own? What if we were known around the college world not only for our outstanding academics and athletics, but also for our dedication to keeping our campus lawns green and our air pure?

Our special circumstances as a college town allowed us to develop efficient mass transit systems. Because most students live within a couple miles of campus, we can ride our bikes or walk to class. We have the privilege to sit on the grass of the Plaza of the Americas and soak up the sun or rest in the shade of a nice tree. When I leave Gainesville in a couple years, I would like to move someplace where I can do the same thing. Our generation can use our buying power to enable future developments following the model set forth by our university ...

Come for cheese steak, discover more treats
FederalTimes - 6 Aug 2007
... PHILADELPHIA, PA - University City is a vibrant college town, with all the usual round of cafes, bars and bookstores. It’s worth a visit just to soak up the architecture, with myriad Victorian homes lining quiet streets. Its academic surroundings — six colleges and universities in the neighborhood — give the area its unique atmosphere and drive the success of local galleries, museums and theaters ...

Rethink Ithaca
Food, wine, films fill time in Finger Lakes area
News-Journal - 5 Aug 2007
... ITHACA, NY - For my birthday -- the Big 4-0 -- my wife Amber wanted to surprise me with a getaway weekend.

So she Googled things we like to do on vacation. Google found a destination that seemed utterly random but methodically rational as well.

Otherwise, I would have never thought of Ithaca, N.Y. A few people we encountered on our trip asked us why we chose upstate New York, of all places. One urged us to spice up our vacation by making the short drive to Canada.

But the Finger Lakes region was the perfect place for foodies and wine lovers who wanted nothing more than to indulge in a few good meals, see some independent movies that would never make it to Daytona Beach, and bask in the gorgeous scenery ...
