Bloomington: Hoosier heaven
Enquirer - 4 Aug 2007
... BLOOMINGTON, IN - It was my daughter's desire to visit Indiana University that prompted my first-ever trip to Bloomington this summer. It was my desire to see all the sites we missed that prompted my return trip a few weeks later.

If Bloomington had nothing more to boast than Indiana University, that would be enough. The 38,000-student campus was named one of the five most beautiful U.S. campuses by the book "The Campus as a Work of Art." It teems with flowers, trees and lush lawns.

Branding promises Fort Collins renewal
NorthFortyNews - 4 Aug 2007
... FORT COLLINS, CA - Look alive, Fort Collins, because we want the whole world to know that this is the place "where renewal is a way of life."

That proposed slogan incorporated into a swooshy logo representing the foothills and Poudre River is perhaps the most tangible product to come out of an $80,000 branding study commissioned by the city.

But city staffers insist the logo is but a very small part of a much bigger branding proposal. It is aimed at establishing a consistent, distinct and unique identity reflecting Fort Collins' superior essence in efforts to market the city as a destination for businesses, visitors and residents ...

Greenways = Greenbacks
MetroMode - 2 Aug 2007
... ANN ARBOR, MI - Ann Arbor has been especially aggressive in creating greenways. The college town has been creating miles of extra bike lanes and trails for years. Its citizens also approved a 0.5-mill millage over 30 years to establish the Greenbelt Program in 2003. The program provides funding to preserve and protect open space, natural habitats, and farms in the Ann Arbor area. It now controls the development rights to more than 700 acres ...

Miami U. Train Death Prompts New Campus Safety Program
WCPO - 2 Aug 2007
... OXFORD, OH - A Miami University student who was killed when walking near railroad tracks while drunk has prompted a new campus safety program.

When students return to Oxford in a couple of weeks, as usual, they'll be reminded of the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

They'll be reminded to lock their doors. They'll also get a lesson in railroad safety ...

... MINNEAPOLIS, MN - University students are traveling more than ever. The number of study-abroad students has more than doubled since 1998, according to Learning Abroad Center statistics ...

But CouchSurfing's mission statement emphasizes a larger purpose than thrifty travel. The organization seeks to "create educational exchanges, raise collective consciousness, spread tolerance and facilitate cultural understanding."

It's within the city that Mitchell hopes to make gains that include advancing the university's relations with the city and the community.

"Reputation starts at home, right in Kingston," he said. "No university, no matter how influential ... is ever better than its reputation in its home base."

Sun - 1 Aug 2007
... GAINESVILLE, FL - The good news is that Gainesville's economy is largely dependent on the University of Florida.

The bad news is that Gainesville's economy is largely dependent on the University of Florida.

Such contradictions abound in an economic outlook report by Moody's Economy.com, a financial research firm. The report was commissioned by The New York Times, which owns The Gainesville Sun ...

EDITORIAL: Accountability key to curbing off-campus misbehavior
...Press-Republican - 1 Aug 2007
... PLATTSBURGH, NY - When the City of Plattsburgh and Plattsburgh State University announced last April that they were going to jointly investigate options for assailing the vandalism and noise problems in the Center City neighborhood just west of downtown, we were hopeful but somewhat skeptical. We've seen many studies, over the years, either turn up tepid responses to other problems or identify effective solutions only to have the problem get lost under a barrage of other priorities.

This one seemed different, though. For one thing, Dr. Edward Miller of the college was put in charge of this exploratory commission, and he has a history of getting things done. For another, there was enough neighborhood agitation to give the inquiry more than a little urgency.

What it came up with as an attack on drunken, late-night behavior has all the earmarks of an effective approach ...

Domestic partnership registry opens today
Same-sex couples hail recognition
Journal Wold - 1 Aug 2007
... LAWRENCE, KS - Many couples on Tuesday, however, said the insurance issue was not why they were going to sign up for the registry. Several were employees of Kansas University, which does not offer domestic partner benefits, and nothing in the city ordinance requires companies or organizations to extend health benefits to domestic partners.

For those people, joining the registry is about much more than health benefits. It is about social change ...
