Selling Students on Sustainable Living
Inside Higher Ed. - 31 Jul 2007
... CALIFORNIA, PA - In the seven years since the university began demolishing its six old residence halls, full-time equivalent enrollment has risen from roughly 5,100 to 7,000 students. The past several years have seen 8 to 10 percent annual growth. Armenti credits some of that surge to the five — and soon-to-be six — new eco-friendly dorms, all of which are slated to be at capacity.

Come fall, when the final of the six new residence halls opens, about 2,200 students will live in university housing, Armenti expects. The bed count is up, and the number of students per bathroom — an important ratio for undergraduates these days — is down. No student shares a bathroom facility with more than three others in the new halls and most share with one other person; a far cry from the previous double-digit norm ...

City's bill to fight UCSC growth could reach $1 million
Sentinel - 30 Jul 2007
... SANTA CRUZ, CA — Nearly half a million dollars and climbing.

That's what the city's legal bill looks like so far in the ongoing court battle with UC Santa Cruz over the university's proposed growth plan that city leaders expect to strain area traffic, housing and water by adding 4,500 students to the campus.

"The cost to this city of the university not being responsible for growth makes half a million dollars look like nothing," Councilman Mike Rotkin said. "We know it's a lot. It hurts us. It's a big chunk of change for us" ...

Missoula rocks record store
Rockin' Rudy's captures Ma & Pa record store appeal
University Chronicle - 30 Jul 2007
... MISSOULA, MT - In the heart of most college towns lies a record store; St. Cloud has the Electric Fetus, and Missoula, Mont. has Rockin' Rudy's.

Rockin' Rudy's has fueled Missoula's music scene for the past 30-some years. Its location has changed three times, but the owner remains the same, and with him the store's style ...

Carbondale's proposed tax plan ought to be decided by voters
The Southern - 30 Jul 2007
... CARBONDALE, IL - We were surprised to learn about the proposed increase in sales taxes in Carbondale. Mayor Brad Cole and City Manager Jeff Doherty are offering a .5 percent increase in sales taxes that may generate about $2.3 million annually. The revenue will be used to address capital projects such as a police station and a fire station; develop open space with the addition of bikeways and sidewalks; and contribute about $1 million a year to Saluki Way, the initiative at SIUC that includes the replacement of McAndrew Stadium and an upgrade to SIUC Arena.

It was this last item, a $1 million per year donation to SIUC for 20 years - that had us scratching our heads. It is simply unprecedented. As Mayor Cole acknowledges there is not an example of this sort of thing in any college town in Illinois, and perhaps anywhere in the United States ...

Ban on yard parking may complicate game days
News - 30 Jul 2007
... TUSCALOOSA, AL - On Sept. 1, the masses will descend upon Tuscaloosa in anticipation of the University of Alabama football team’s home opener.

But those who haven’t planned ahead may find it difficult to find a parking spot within walking distance of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

And if the Tuscaloosa City Council adopts an ordinance restricting parking in front yards, those who once gave a hungry college student $10 for a lawn spot may find themselves giving that cash to a UA parking attendant instead.

The Residential Collage
Residential Colleges Expanding
NY Times - 29 Jul 2007
... USA - A rash of projects now under way, from Middlebury College in Vermont to Willamette University in Oregon, suggests the trend is expanding. At Cornell, in fact, Cook and Becker are only the first pieces of the $200 million West Campus Initiative; three more houses will be operating by 2010. Michigan State and Louisiana State will open their first residential colleges in the fall. Vanderbilt’s $150 million campus-within-a-campus — 10 houses, dean’s residence, dining center and public square — should be ready in 2008.

The paradigm, of course, is the English college, which dates back to the 13th century. The 31 colleges that constitute Cambridge and the 39 at Oxford are self-governing units responsible for admitting, housing and feeding students and, to a significant degree, teaching them — the university is a unifying administrator that determines course offerings and degrees ...

Northern Berkshires hosts world-class galleries
Democrat & Chronicle - 29 Jul 2007
... WILLIAMSPORT, MA — Tucked into the northwest corner of Massachusetts, in a tidy New England village rimmed by mountains and forest, is a surprising find for art lovers: a world-class art museum, now hosting a groundbreaking exhibit of works by Impressionist painter Claude Monet.

When it's time for a break, head to Spring Street, Williamstown's downtown business district. Even though this is a college town, Spring Street is more upscale than funky, with a tantalizing array of shops and restaurants, including the Spice Root Indian restaurant and Sushi Thai Garden ...

Oxford moves along the Pathways
Daily Journal - 29 Jul 2007
... OXFORD, MS - "Oxford is the nicest place for bicycling I've been," said Dr. Mike Mossing, chair of the city's Pathways Commission, who often rides from his home to the University of Mississippi campus, where he teaches biology. "The scale of the town is ideal - Oxford's only a couple of miles across."

He previously biked in much larger university towns such as Madison, Wis.

Recent additions to Oxford's Pathways project serve riders both nostalgic and practical, along with folks who'd rather walk, run or skate. The most notable advancement is a new steel bridge over Jackson Avenue, which links the Pathways "backbone" - a combination of paved trail and bike lanes that follow the old Mississippi Central Railway roadbed, including a portion that became Gertrude Ford Boulevard, where a sidewalk accommodates pedestrians ...

Forging bonds: SCSU's president hopes to foster local partnerships
Times - 29 Jul 2007
... SAINT CLOUD, MN - Potter wants to explore the concept of a university town, something that likely will be included in conversations about how the university coexists with the surrounding southside neighborhoods. Potter is well aware that there have been rough spots in the past. Cooperation with the city is essential to preventing problems in the future, he said.

"We really haven't talked together about the development of a university town, which this is. And, if we do our job really well, what it should look and feel like," Potter said. "And we talked a little bit about looking at those communities that have done a good job of creating a university district at the boundary between the town and the university that is an upbeat, positive, healthy place. And there are university communities around the country that have taken pretty discouraging situations and turned them around and made them positive." ...

UGA could help create Normaltown 'treasure'
Banner-Herald - 29 Jul 2007
... ATHENS, GA - With a walkable campus as a model, Normaltown could be rejuvenated as a vibrant community center. While increased property values might cause changes in the makeup and look of Normaltown, we still should see an increase in the number of shops and restaurants to serve students, faculty and staff, as well as the nearby Athens Regional Medical Center and adjacent neighborhoods. This increased economic activity should serve to compel the county, the state Department of Transportation, UGA, ARMC and the surrounding neighborhoods to work together on a comprehensive plan to manage traffic on this section of Prince Avenue, further enhancing Normaltown's viability as a neighborhood center.

The increased demand for housing also is a concern for surrounding neighborhoods, as more properties will likely be converted to student housing, be it rental or family-owned. Increased demand might drive up property values and, therefore, taxes. This already is an issue in established neighborhoods throughout Athens and again, UGA's presence in Normaltown could serve as a model by including quality, affordable student housing whose architecture and placement complement the historic structures along Oglethorpe Avenue. By reducing the need for external housing and setting a standard for new development, UGA could be of benefit to the area ...

UGA parkers take up streets
A-C may expand permit system
Banner-Herald - 29 Jul 2007
... ATHENS, GA - Athens-Clarke County might issue parking permits this winter to more residents of neighborhoods around the University of Georgia to keep UGA students and employees from parking there.

Just 15 percent of the cars parked streetside between UGA, West Broad Street, Baxter Street and South Milledge Avenue belonged to the people who live there, according to an April study by the Athens-Clarke Transportation and Public Works Department.

The data back up frequent complaints from Five Points and Midtown/Bloomfield residents that students are dodging university parking fees by taking their streetside spots ...

Professor dives into first faculty-in-residence program at McKendree
Post-Dispatch - 29 Jul 2007
... LEBANON, MO — Betsy Gordon gets a free two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment for the entire year — utilities included.

The catch? Her neighbors will be about a third her age and she could end up grading some of them.

At Penn, a new degree of comfort
Schools turn to private sector for better student housing.
Inquirer - 28 Jul 2007
... PHILADELPHIA, PA - University of Pennsylvania student Colena Davis has been watching the hulking structure going up at 39th and Walnut Streets across from campus with great interest. It could be her future home.

The $50 million student apartment complex will have all the comforts of home and more, which is good because the 21-year-old senior has been commuting to Penn from her parents' Blue Bell house for the last three years.

"All the perks are amazing, and it's in a prime location," ...

Ole Miss experience
Daily Journal - 28 Jul 2007
... OXFORD, MS - At the British universities in Oxford and Cambridge, students and faculty live, dine and socialize in the same cluster of buildings in which they go to class or laboratory. The same is true at American universities such as Harvard and Yale.

In two years, some University of Mississippi students and faculty are expected to have the same type of experience in Ole Miss' first "residential college." ...

Bluff Road cottages in works
Developers, investors to buy homes to rent to college students
The State - 28 Jul 2007
... ARTHURTOWN, SC - Developers are planning 140 student cottages on Bluff Road in Arthurtown.

Construction is expected to start on The Retreat — a collection of colorful arts-and-crafts cottages — in October and be complete in time for students to move in before the beginning of fall semester 2008.

The cottages, which will cost $180,000 to $250,000, will be sold to investors and developers and rented to students.

As land becomes scarce around the University of South Carolina campus, the Bluff Road area is quickly becoming attractive to developers looking to build housing for college students ...

Ames anti-"Animal House" housing ordinance legal, Iowa Supreme Court says
Courier - 28 Jul 2007
... AMES, IA - The city of Ames doesn't want a bunch of college students running around in togas in an Animal House located in quiet family neighborhood and is within its rights to enforce a housing ordinance to keep it from happening, a narrowly divided Iowa Supreme Court ruled on Friday.

The court said the city's ordinance banning more than three unrelated people from living in a home in certain residential zones is constitutional and may be enforced ...

The ordinance, passed in 2000, was designed to stem the flow of Iowa State University students into residential areas, creating what the court refers to as an "Animal House" atmosphere in quiet family-populated neighborhoods ...

Space tight at Troy University despite new apartment-style residence halls
Eagle - 28 Jul 2007
... TROY, AL - Space will remain tight for on-campus living at Troy University despite the addition of new residence halls to the main campus.

The university dedicated the residence halls and a new bookstore on Friday. Trojan Village consists of four multi-story residence halls on six acres of land on the main campus’ western edge. The apartment-style halls feature two-four bedroom suites with a kitchenette and private bathrooms and bedrooms.

The new student housing development adds about 524 spots to on-campus housing, bringing Troy’s total on-campus housing capacity to about 2,000. Despite the addition, Herb Reeves, dean of students, said that the university will still have to turn some students away from on-campus housing for lack of space. Reeves said that numbers remain in flux as the fall semester approaches, but that on-campus housing is overbooked by about 100 students ...

Trader Joe's, Whole Foods spar for market share
Journal-Constitution - 27 Jul 2007
... CHAPEL HILL, NC - Less than a mile from Whole Foods' sprawling grocery store in Chapel Hill, N.C., a challenger clad in a Hawaiian shirt is coming.

It's not surprising that Trader Joe's — the California-based grocer known for its natural foods and eclectic assortment of specialty goods like spicy Thai peanuts and "two-buck Chuck" wines from Charles Shaw — would move into the Southern college town.

But the fact that Trader Joe's new store will open this fall so close to a Whole Foods outlet supports the contention by Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods that the chain will continue to face intense competitive pressure, even if federal regulators allow its planned purchase of competitor Wild Oats Markets Inc ...

There is no there, there
Citizen - 27 Jul 2007
... OTTAWA, ON - I left Mississauga after Grade 13 for the University of Western Ontario in London. With a wonderful campus and a real sense of community, Western was responsible for five of the best years of my life.

Walking was the preferred means of transport. To classes, to the library, to pub nights, the legendary Ceeps hotel, to campus movie nights, Mustangs football and basketball. Old, traditional residences on campus became like big families, only with better floor parties. Grocery stores, banks, bookstores, pizza joints, variety stores were just a short stroll away. In some areas of campus, cars were banned ...

Inn & Out
University Inn serves as overflow student housing

Arbiter - 27 Jul 2007
... BOISE, ID - There is no doubt that Boise State is growing in leaps and bounds. It is impossible to look across campus and not see construction equipment dotting the horizon. These changes, however, come not only in the form of new structures but also in the retiring of the old.

University Inn, a veritable landmark on Capitol Boulevard, will be torn down next year to make way for the new College of Business and Economics Building. Boise State purchased the University Inn last year for $3.2 million and has a temporary lease on the property ...

Off the Quad
Inside Higher Ed - 27 Jul 2007
... USA - Within the next year, hundreds of people in Stanford University’s business affairs division will move from their offices on the main campus to an off-site research park. By then, Cornell University employees in some of the administrative and non-academic departments will have settled into their new off-campus facility.

As many universities continue to face space squeezes, they are freeing up room for teaching and research by moving non-academic staff away from the central campus. Officials say it’s the best option given the growing demand for classroom and lab space, but some fear staff will become less connected to their institutions as they move farther away ...

From Bologna To Krakow: The European Campus Tour
Jewish Week - 27 Jul 2007
... EUROPE - In Coimbra, a shimmering white hill town of central Portugal, I was kept awake until well past midnight by the boisterous singing of new university graduates, who strolled the narrow, cobblestoned streets in traditional black capes.

Granted, if I weren’t a night owl, I might not have been charmed. But it was certainly a distinctive kind of nighttime entertainment. And it illustrated the particular lure of college towns, which are increasingly popular as tourist destinations for their blend of unique culture, youthful energy and abundant activities ...

Support for local growers betters life, community
University Star - 25 Jul 2007
... SAN MARCOS, TX - There’s much to be said about a strong local economy. In a college town, where a vast majority of the money spent comes from the student population, it’s of utmost importance to the economy to recycle the money, to keep it in the hands of Central Texas employees and business owners. Why eat at Chipotle, anyway, when down the street you could eat better at Zooka’s, or around the corner at Taqueria El Charro? Same goes for Subway, Which Wich? and the rest of the big-business interlopers. For these businesses to even be around in a year will be a tragedy for local small business and a sore on the city.

It’s convenient to be able to fight and make a difference with your checkbook, but at some point such idle and ostensibly effete methods of protest will fall short of real action and politicking. Healthy bodies and healthy economies are tied together, so ensure care of both ...

Oxford spared by swollen Thames, nearby regions on alert for more flooding
Globe and Mail - 25 Jul 2007
... OXFORD, UK - Relief spread through Oxford yesterday afternoon as water rushing against the swollen banks of the River Thames failed to reach heights that experts predicted would submerge much of this university town.

Crown Hill seeks to buy ex-school
News-Tribune - 24 Jul 2007
... SEATTLE, WA - The seeds of a partnership sprouted last week between the Seattle School District, city officials and Crown Hill neighbors to preserve land that residents say brings the community together.

That was true last Wednesday when more than a hundred adults and children joined a community forum at the former Crown Hill Elementary School. Since the School Board voted last month to surplus, or sell, five of it's excess facilities, including Crown Hill, the community has organized an effort to buy the site.

"To us it's more than open space," said Molly Hanson, president of the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association, one of the key groups leading the charge. "I mean this is our community." ...

Foley: Looking for love? Don't try a college town
Quarter- life crisis
State Journal - 24 Jul 2007
... EAST LANSING, MI - According to CNNMoney. com, if you want to meet "that special someone," East Lansing is the place to go. It's the seventh-best place to meet singles.

This is a lie.

Dating's fine, that's fun. But serious, long-term relationships? Very rarely does it happen in a college town. If you want chemistry, go to a science class. If you want to mix up ingredients for nuclear fallout, then maybe a college town's right up your alley ...

Dorms: Dream or nightmare?
Locals cry foul to college plans
Daily News - 24 Jul 2007
... QUEENS, NY - An Alabama developer with a 17-year track record in student housing has been chosen to build the first dormitories at Queens College - another step forward in a project strongly opposed by local residents.

The Capstone Development Corp. of Birmingham is hammering out a contract with the college to construct low-rise dorms on what are now tennis courts between the Flushing school's gym and library.

Negotiations could last for months, college spokeswoman Maria Terrone said. The $63 million project would likely include beds for 450 to 550 students by its completion in August 2009. The college has said that the dorms are needed to compete with the likes of Harvard, Yale and MIT for high-quality students.

Civic leaders said they are still opposed to building dorms for what has historically been a commuter school, and they have predicted the move will increase campus problems such as litter, noise, parking and traffic ...

Anthony Pearce, director of innovation, said Unite could now produce modular buildings of up to 11 storeys ready for occupation.

Typically, these buildings will come out of the factory near Gloucester complete with light shades and mattresses on the beds ...

Obama's Neighborhood: Rich in Diversity
Guardian - 23 Jul 2007
... HYDE PARK, IL - With the intellectual vibe of a college town and the tree-lined streets to match, Obama's neighborhood is dominated by the prestigious University of Chicago, where he once taught constitutional law.

High achievement and diversity are hallmarks of his Hyde Park-Kenwood community, technically two adjoining neighborhoods but usually referred to collectively. The community has been home to a long list of well-known residents, from the nation's first black woman senator and Chicago's first black mayor to legendary Scopes Trial defense attorney Clarence Darrow and an assortment of Nobel Prize winners and business magnates ...

Let's look for the opportunity that comes with being a university town
DurhamRegion - 23 Jul 2007
... OSHAWA, ON - The issue of off-campus student housing and its affect on local residents has been around for some time.

As a guide, most Ontario universities provide first-year students with residence accommodations which account for approximately 20 to 25 per cent of the full-time population.

The remaining second-, third- and fourth-year students are expected to seek accommodations off campus, which means living within our Oshawa community.

This is the flash point of the entire problem. Student meets resident and the rest is old news (loud parties, disorderly conduct, poorly kept properties, and the litany could go on and on). I speak with some authority on this matter as I was a university student in each of the last three decades and the location of my home for the last six years has been at ground zero, 300 metres due south of UOIT ...

... IOWA CITY, IA - With many leases expiring soon, Iowa City officials have a plan they hope will clear up curbsides and the landfill.

Pitt seeks trust from community
Tribune-Review - 22 Jul 2007
Pittsburgh. PA - Today, local groups are virtually unanimous in their praise for Pitt's collaboration with its neighbors on development projects. That distinguishes Pitt from other universities across the country. People living near colleges frequently object to expansion plans, fearing a loss of neighborhood tranquility and value.

Pitt learned its lesson in 1991 when the razing of Syria Mosque for a parking lot turned into public relations disaster ...

Soak, drink and be merry in Eger
HUNGARIAN VALLEY TOWN HAS SPAS, WINE AND MORE
Mercury News - 22 Jul 2007
... EGAR, HU - Tucked into a valley between two mountain ranges, Eger is a university town, and students with backpacks and iPods mix with women in bandanas selling cabbages the size of soccer balls.

It has enough attractions to be a mini-version of Germany's Rothenburg or Belgium's Bruges, without the crowds or high prices.

We paid $54 for a double room with breakfast at the Dobo Guesthouse off the main square. A cardamom-laced coffee at the Cafe Arabica around the corner cost the equivalent of $2 in Hungarian forint, the colorful local currency decorated with pictures of castles and kings.

The old town center is walkable and compact with cobblestone pedestrian streets and baroque-style buildings painted in mint greens and lemon yellows. Cafes line Dobo Square, where statues honor town hero Istavan Dobo and others, including many women, who defended Eger and its castle against the invading Ottoman Turks in 1552 ...

Universities must develop civic leadership roles in their communities
Daily Press - 22 Jul 2007
... USA - A stunning variety of similar initiatives followed. A historic park was revived and a farmers market added. Neighborhood watches were enhanced. University police foot patrols were coordinated with Philadelphia city police.

On a parallel track, Penn intervened to bolster homeownership and upgrade the deteriorated housing stock in University City, including attention to rental stock and protecting its low-income neighbors from being forced out by gentrification. The university pledged it would never again seize local residential property for its own expansion. It encouraged, and itself invested strategically, in major new retail development to turn stretches of low-grade buildings and parking lots into attractive, welcoming streets.

Penn also worked to help local businesses (many minority owned) share significantly its hundreds of millions of dollars in yearly purchases of goods and services. And it started up a model local public school ...

Professor sets example for living life well
Tribune - 22 Jul 2007
... USA - There's no formula for getting old well, no first draft, no rehearsal. Aging is the ultimate improvisation.

And we could all take some improv lessons from Virginia Crosby, who turns 90 this week ...

As a student, I knew hardly anything about her past and it didn't occur to me to wonder. Your teachers, like your parents, seem born old, fixed in time like rocks ...

Then, 25 or so years ago, Madame Crosby retired. Her husband had died, her children were grown, and she thought about doing what many of her fellow professors did, which was moving into a retirement complex in the suburban California college town.

She thought about it, and then she moved to Paris.

For the next quarter-century, through her 70s and 80s, she lived in the 6th arrondissement, alone, in tiny but elegant spaces, soaking up life. She went to movies and plays and dinners and art shows, devoured books and newspapers, and entertained the scores of ex-students who paraded through.

She got jaunty haircuts, grew active in American politics abroad and started doing Pilates a decade before it hit the States.

She also wrote ...

Advertiser - 22 Jul 2007
