Purdue, UI offer many similarities and differences
Press-Citizen - 30 Jun 2007
... WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - From the historic campus to a lively shopping district, from coffee house clusters to 25-cent beer specials, Purdue University and the city of West Lafayette resemble the town-and-gown community in Iowa City.

"The cultures of the universities are fairly similar; they are both in small college towns. I don't think any of the differences will present a barrier in the transition," said Craig Svensson, who was named dean of Purdue's College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences last fall after three years at the University of Iowa ...

I.V. apartments to become affordable housing
Goleta Valley Voice - 30 Jun 2007
... ISLA VISTA, CA - Two 10-unit apartment buildings in Isla Vista have been acquired by the county to create 20 units of affordable housing.

Just steps away from the Cedarwood apartments on Picasso Road — where 55 working-class families were evicted by Conquest Student Housing, presumably to build luxury student apartment — the new units, which will be called the Parkview Apartments, are at 6682 and 6688 Picasso Road.

The units were purchased by the county Housing Authority with $3.76 million borrowed from the county Redevelopment Agency. The Housing Authority will own, rehabilitate and manage the property in perpetuity as affordable housing. Peikert Group Architects will assist with the renovations ...

In Charlottesville, free ice cream intended to unite town, gown
Daily Progress - 29 Jun 2007
... CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The group's purpose? To unify people who wouldn't normally come together and express their faith in a physical way, said James Erickson, the ice cream truck's brainchild.

"There's power in sharing with people things that we all love," said the rising U.Va. fourth-year who grew up in a low-income family in Detroit. "In Charlottesville, people come from different backgrounds, and stereotypes build up. There's this anger between groups. The perception of some in the community toward U.Va. students is that they are infringing on the rest of the community. We wanted to find a way to reach out and throw out this bomb of joy within the community." ...

Growing interest in loft apartments has developers upbeat about downtown
Tribune-Herald - 29 Jun 2007
... WACO, TX - With hotels, restaurants and offices taking shape there, downtown Waco is becoming a vibrant place that people want to call home.
Sugar Land mayor and developer Dave Wallace visited Waco on Thursday.

Literally.

That’s what backers of a $60 million downtown project called Waco Town Square are saying. Interest in their proposed loft apartments is exceeding expectations, prompting them to rethink their original plans and consider building more lofts in their first phase ...

University joins city task force on housing
Task force to explore potential solutions to Charlottesville's high cost of housing
Cavalier Daily - 28 Jun 2007
... CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The current housing affordability issue stems from increasing taxes, according to Phillips, resulting in a situation where residents are having difficulty finding and affording a home.

One option the University is considering is to buy some of the housing around the University and sell it to University employees, Phillips said.

"The task force has a multitude of different options to solve the problem, from essentially subsidizing housing to awarding grants," Phillips said. "It's just a question of what the final picture will look like." ...

Graduate housing landlords, university meet
Diamondback - 28 Jun 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - College Park's housing shortage has hit graduate students particularly hard and unpredictable rate increases leave Southern Management's residents struggling to afford their rent. The meeting may affect mid-lease rent increases, clarify the graduate housing complex's lease and evict several alumni who still reside in the student housing.

"With all these public-private partnerships being signed, people need to know that there are big pitfalls," Moore said. "Essentially you're putting someone in charge of student housing whose first priority is not students, it's making profit ... These partnerships need to be done very differently from this one."

Work starts on student housing complex
120-unit Riverview Apartments will cater to those attending UR
Democrat & Chronicle - 28 Jun 2007
... ROCHESTER, NY - "You are building a great community, and this is an important step forward," UR President Joel Seligman told a crowd of several dozen people who gathered for the groundbreaking. He added that the housing development would help UR strengthen bonds with the city.

The $25 million project is the first of two major new housing developments scheduled to begin construction this year. The Mills at High Falls — at $17 million and 80 units — should break ground in November or December.

A college town builds a year-round downtown
CityPulse - 27 Jun 2007
... EAST LANSING, MI - To the delight of Singh and other city officials, the City Center’s condos filled up before the doors opened, bringing a mix of students, professionals and empty-nesters to the heart of downtown for the first time.

“In the condo developments, we’re seeing a good mix,” Singh said. “In the City Center, out of 39, only three went to students.” Meanwhile, the more affordable Stonehouse I filled up with undergrads and grad students.

The ongoing buildup is quickly changing the face of a East Lansing’s downtown. The small-town model — motley, ragged-toothed rows of retail storefronts interrupted by asphalt parking lots — is slowly giving way to neatly fitted, postmodern slabs of brick, frosted (like cupcakes) with layers of white masonry and peaks that mirror the university buildings across Grand River ...

'Other Dorr St.' talks seek renewal strategy
Blade - 27 Jun 2007
... TOLEDO, OH - Last month, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and University of Toledo President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs talked about working together to develop a student village environment along Dorr, where the university is located.

That development, called the University Town District, would include new shops, cafes, restaurants, bookstores, and other student-oriented amenities ...

LSU-area student housing developments, lots cost $85 million
Advocate - 27 Jun 2007
... BATON ROUGE, LA - Sales records show Campus Apartments Inc. of Philadelphia paid a total of $85.5 million earlier this month on four properties on the north side of the LSU campus and another on Brightside Drive.

Campus Apartments had refused to say how much it spent on the three student housing developments and two empty lots. But clerk of court records filed this week show the company paid:

--$30 million for The Venue at Northgate.

--Just under $18 million for University House on Highland.

--$32.4 million for University House on Brightside.

--$4.1 million for the empty lot where the University Shopping Center was.

--Just over $1 million for a lot across West State Street, where a McDonald’s and Arzi’s used to be.

The transactions were part of Campus Apartment’s $256 million deal to buy 14 student housing properties in six states from FirstWorthing Residential Co. of Dallas. The deal also included one student housing property in Lafayette ...

College probing shops for students
Virginia Gazette - 27 Jun 2007
... WILLIAMSBURG, VA — Everyone at the College of William & Mary wants more student-oriented shops near campus. The city certainly wants students to spend their money in town.

But restrictive city zoning rules out the idea of stores on the first floor of dorms, as found in other college towns. A firestorm broke out a few years ago when apartment-like dorms were proposed on Richmond Road, and those didn’t include shops.

As a result, the college is looking to develop its own retail sector, perhaps on the old hospital property ...

'Upscale' complexes paradox to college life
High-priced loft-style apartments near campus are unrealistic for college students.
Minnesota Daily - 27 Jun 2007
... MINNEAPOLIS, MN - By the middle of the summer most returning University students have made housing arrangements for the coming school year. Some students choose to stay within the University housing system, but many choose off-campus rental units in neighborhoods surrounding the University. Off-campus living can be cheaper and can provide more personal space than living in the dorms, but many properties are promising students a luxurious lifestyle at an extreme cost. This growing trend seems problematic to the student experience and sets up students for unrealistic expectations about their current and future standards of living.

The Northstar at Siebert Field is the newest of these higher-end apartment complexes marketed toward University students. The building's Web site boasts loft-style units, flat-screen TVs in bathrooms, European-style cabinetry and exercise facilities ...

Can People's Park change?
Feelings are fierce on both sides about haven for homeless
Chronicle - 26 Jun 2007
... BERKELEY, CA - People's Park is a social puzzle that has defied nearly 40 years of attempts by UC Berkeley to solve it, largely because the university and many neighbors see it as a problem but the park's most loyal users treasure it as one of the city's most vibrant open spaces.

Now the university as owner of the land is trying a new approach, using a consulting firm to patiently confer with park lovers and shunners in hopes of reaching a consensus on the park's future.

The work is as much therapy as planning -- that's how deep the divisions run over a nearly 3-acre urban rectangle that embodies Berkeley's role in the anti-war and free speech movements of the 1960s and '70s ...

Daily Hampshire Gazette (subscription) - 26 Jun 2007

College fraternities: from pranks to public service
A reporter returns to his college fraternity to find knee-slapping reminiscing and what-were-we-thinking introspection.
Christian Science Monitor - 26 Jun 2007
... OXFORD, OH - In light of the passage of time, the present-day recollections tell a larger story about why one of the most enduring features of American university life – the social fraternity – ultimately waned for more than a decade. But they also help explain why the phenomenon still appeals and why its retooling is aiding something of a rebirth with the "millennial" generation.

"The party animal frat boy is old school and old hat," says Jon Williamson, executive vice president of the North-American Interfraternity Conference, which represents 5,500 chapters on 800 US campuses ...

Relief as student buildings rejected
Mail - 25 Jun 2007

Colleges a growth tactic
Campuses anchor three subdivisions in the early planning stages in region.
Bee - 25 Jun 2007
... CALIFORNIA - In its bubble of academia, dorms and downtown shops, the city of Davis -- home of a University of California campus -- certainly has a college-town feel.

What if cool college towns sprouted near Roseville and Rancho Cordova?

Developers hope the idea will generate excitement -- and support -- from city and county officials. It also would open the door to build more homes. Thousands of them ...

Connecting campus to Catonsville
Times - 25 Jun 2007
... CANTONSVILLE, MD - University of Maryland, Baltimore County students could be seeing more of Frederick Road -- and vice versa -- as a result of changes to UMBC's transit system that took effect June 1.

As university officials renamed all of their routes to reflect the destinations they served, the former Red Route became the Catonsville Route ...

Commentary: Students in the Neighborhood, Good or Bad for Property Values?
RISMedia - 25 Jun 2007
... USA - Those of us who’ve accumulated a bit of dust on our diplomas tend to idealize college towns. We remember the cozy brick faculty houses, the wrought-iron fences and the clambering ivy; we forget the unpainted shutters, the broken beer bottles and the weeds.

But as 80 million echo boomers make their way through the educational system, their impact is becoming harder to ignore. Total enrollment in degree-granting institutions is projected to grow between 13% and 18% between the years 2004 and 2015, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, and there simply isn’t enough on-campus housing to accommodate them all? ...

College faculty may get housing help
District plans to construct 60-unit apartment complex for Canada staff, teachers
Inside Bay Area - 24 Jun 2007
... REDWOOD CITY, CA — Higher-education officials are crossing borders to try to build affordable housing for faculty and staff at Canada College.

The San Mateo County Community College District wants to construct a 60-unit apartment complex on a campus parking lot straddling the boundary line between Woodside and Redwood City.

Woodside leaders recently expressed willingness to hand over the town's piece to Redwood City so the project could move forward ...

In North Carolina, school's out
Journal News - 24 Jun 2007
... NORTH CAROLINA - On this warm late-spring morning, however, the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is mostly empty and quiet. Wandering past landmarks I once passed daily, I couldn't help but think that author (and fellow alum) Thomas Wolfe was right: You can't go home again. But maybe that's not such a bad thing.

The Triangle region, so named for its three principal towns of Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh, holds more than just bastions of higher education, dive bars and cheap eats. When the 78,000-plus students from its colleges and universities (including UNC, Duke and N.C. Central universities in Durham and N.C. State in Raleigh) are gone for the summer, the Triangle's grown-up side is never more evident ...

Indiana may prevent single-family homes converting into student rentals
Tribune-Review - 24 Jun 2007
... INDIANA, PA - Harold Adamson has lived in Indiana Borough most of his 82 years.

Mike Leedecke, 21, moved there two years ago to attend classes at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

They are on opposite ends of an intensifying debate on a proposed borough ordinance that would keep students from renting homes in some residential areas.

Officials in college towns such as California and Slippery Rock are watching with interest. Jesse Hines, code enforcement officer for Slippery Rock Borough, said there is a constant challenge in a college town to balance the needs of students and families ...

Georgia town is more than antebellum relic
Plain Dealer - 24 Jun 2007
... MILLEDGEVILLE, GA - That's not the only reason to visit Milledgeville, however. This city of 19,000 also is the hometown of author Flannery O'Connor, whose writings have won wide acclaim. O'Connor, whose life was cut short by lupus at 39, wrote most of her novels and short stories at her Andalusia Farm here.

And Milledgeville is also a college town. Georgia College and State University, a liberal arts college, is situated here, as is Georgia Military College, a prep school (grades seven through 12) and junior college whose signature building is the former capitol. Students give the city a lively aspect (perhaps too lively, some residents say), particularly at such downtown hangouts as The Brick, Capital City and Amici's ...
