Global shipping starts in Ithaca
Post Standart - 23 Jun 2007
... ITHACA, NY - If you'd like to get nine grand for a toy boat, it helps to advertise to a wide audience.

Sellers in Ithaca made more than $1.2 million selling 8,800 items internationally on eBay during the first three months of this year. That made the college town the top U.S. city in international sales for that period on the online auction site.

"It's very rare to sell that many items internationally," said Sara Schoenborn, speaking for eBay. "Ithaca had very unique items, and that probably appealed to a much broader audience." ...

Housing Moratorium Causing Controversy In Orono video
WCSH6 - 21 Jun 2007
... ORONO, ME - - A moratorium in Orono could change the way University of Maine students live. New temporary regulations in Orono are restricting how many people can live in a home together if they are not related.

It's part of an effort to crack down on noise, but opponents say it's a college town and that's to be expected.

Town councilors have enacted a six month moratorium that prohibits more than three people from moving into a single family house together if they are not related. Before the new moratorium, five unrelated people were allowed to live in a single family home ...

School year over, progressive co-op readies for transition
News - 21 Jun 2007
... ATHENS, OH - The Wire is where the heart is for numerous Ohio University students and Athens community members, and they're hoping that's where the heart will remain.

And while funding issues are apparently providing at least a temporary bump in the road, staffers say that's not unusual at the end of a school year.

As an independently funded organization, The Wire -- located in the Wire Community Resource Center on Kern Street in Athens -- is experiencing a fiscal transition period, but staff members insist they see a bright future for the program as long as people continue to volunteer ...

University must back Route 1 revitalization
Diamondback - 21 Jun 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - In a largely symbolic legislative move, the Prince George's County Council voted to increase the priority of the Route 1 Corridor project from sixth to fourth in their county transportation plan, a decision that may prove to be a boon for university students in the years to come if the university ever decides to jump on the Route 1 bandwagon.

In a city whose streets are rife with unsafe street crossings and difficult turns, the redevelopment will improve driving conditions and will cut the pedestrian death rate by replacing the suicide lane in the middle of the road with a median and by adding left-turn lanes. Though this aspect by itself would make the redevelopment worthwhile, the positive effects on local business and the downtown atmosphere of College Park make the proposed improvements all the more key.

The Field of Dreams catch phrase "If you build it, they will come" ought to come to mind - if the state agrees to fund the redevelopment, the appeal of the entire area would be improved, aiding local businesses. The increased appeal would encourage other businesses to move to the area, expanding options currently limited to eateries, bars and liquor stores to the wider range of options commonly found in a college town ...

Student high-rise proposed near NU
Developer's idea draws criticism
Globe - 21 Jun 2007
... BOSTON, MA - A private development team's proposal to build a high-rise for student housing on the edge of Northeastern's campus is angering the university, already under fire itself for its dorm projects that would push student residences farther into -- and above -- the urban neighborhoods that surround them.

The proposal opens a new front in the town vs. gown battles already raging in Allston with Harvard University, and in Brighton with Boston College. As with the other plans, wary neighbors fearful of hulking buildings and booming parties are also pushing back.

"The big picture is, this could eventually bring 3,000 students into basically a one-block area," said Barbara Simons , who lives on Symphony Road and leads a group of neighbors who oppose the high-rise. "It's a huge 34-story tower, and we don't like it one little bit." ...

Double dose of good green news
Harvard, Cambridge celebrate Blackstone, Switch House projects
Harvard Gazette - 21 Jun 2007
... CAMBRIDGE, MA - Harvard and City of Cambridge officials on Tuesday (June 19) used the penultimate day of spring to celebrate a double dose of sunny news.

One item: Thirty-three new affordable housing units renovated from a onetime utility switch house on Blackstone Street, near the Western Avenue Bridge across the Charles River.

And the second item, right across the street: 46 Blackstone South. Just a few years ago it was an underused urban eyesore - a 19th-century cluster of buildings bounded by Blackstone Street, Western Avenue, and Memorial Drive. Now Blackstone South, a consolidation of three buildings into one, is a Harvard-owned office winning awards for environmental design.

The Blackstone renovation, completed last year, has received the highest ("platinum") rating by the U.S. Green Building Council ...

... CALGARY. AB - The University of Calgary is expanding its frontiers westward.

The master plan for the development of West Campus was revealed at two open houses, held Thu., Jun. 14 and Tue., Jun. 19. Athens still a rockin' town, as AthFest approaches
Murmurs - 20 Jun 2007
... ATHENS GA - AthFest, the music, arts and kids festival in R.E.M.'s home town, kicks off today - and, by means of preview, the Associated Press writes the place is still amongst the most buzzing and creative in the world.

Back when R.E.M. started up amongst a clutch of bands including Pylon and the B52s in the early 80s, Athens' alternative, liberal college-town vibe gave rise to a "scene" that was, writes David Buckley in his book R.E.M. Fiction, actually pretty small - but one that has passed in to legend.

AP: "In a town of roughly 100,000 people, Athens has an estimated 500-plus music groups. At that ratio, metro Atlanta would have about 20,000 rock bands and New York City would have more than 40,000." ...

Sun - 20 Jun 2007
... BALTIMORE, MD - Hoping to enliven midtown Baltimore with new residences and shops while providing much needed parking for the University of Baltimore, the university and a private developer are proposing a $75 million luxury apartment project at West Mount Royal Avenue and West Oliver Street.

The Fitzgerald would have approximately 280 market-rate units and 14,000 square feet of street-level retail and wrap around an 1,100-space garage that could be used by students, faculty and the public, said Toby Bozzuto, executive vice president of Bozzuto Development Co ...

Kansan - 19 Jun 2007

The City as a Canvas
State News - 18 Jun 2007
... EAST LANSING, MI - East Lansing prides itself as the city of the arts, an exciting title until you look around and realize the city is a carbon copy of every other middle-class suburban city in America. It needs street art, not only as a way to express the identities that make each resident and the city as a whole unique, but also as a means to ease the mounting tension between its students and a middle-aged oligarchy eager to forget they live in a college town.

Imagine if East Lansing was an interactive city, one where the city's government worked with local businesses and residents to commission murals and zone areas for wheat-pasting flyers ...

UNC Charlotte eyes village development
Observer - 18 Jun 2007
... CHARLOTTE, NC - Leaders at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte are looking to build a small village of shops and amenities to give its campus a college-town feel.

The university is considering using some of its land to build shops, a hotel or a conference center - features with community-wide appeal, similar to Franklin Street at UNC Chapel Hill.

"This is a way to use a real estate development to basically bridge the campus to the community," said Beth Hardin, UNC Charlotte's vice chancellor for business affairs.

The school has wanted to have a place within walking distance where students, faculty and staff could go to shop or eat in addition to the nearby Shoppes at University Place, which has about 80 restaurants and stores.

Though there aren't any firm plans for the project, leaders have included it on a six-year list of proposed construction at the school through 2012. Budgeted at $150 million ...

Cosmopolitan meets country in Fayetteville
North Jersy - 17 Jun 2007
... FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Tucked into the Ozark foothills of northwest Arkansas, the mountain community has an intriguing blend of rural, cosmopolitan and intellectual influences. It's a place where you can kick off the day hiking wooded trails that crisscross the area and cap it off in your downtown condo sipping a glass of Chateau Aux Arc Chardonnay, a lauded local wine. A weekend day spent shopping the farmer's market in the town square can end with a show at the theater ...

"It's a small southern college town with a cultivated urban edge that is surrounded by nature," Patterson said. "Though it has a rural feel, it has everything you would expect to find in a larger city." ...

Joining the inn crowd, former Silicon Graphics workers love running Ashland's oldest B&B
HIGH-TECH REFUGEES CROW ABOUT LEAVING CUPERTINO, RUNNING ICONIC ASHLAND B&B
Mercury News - 17 Jun 2007
... ASHLAND, OR - Another sign that it's a love story is how they ultimately chose Ashland, a town of about 22,000 about 15 miles north of the California border that's a thriving tourist destination thanks to its idyllic setting between the Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges and, more important, the fact that it's home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival ...

In their ranking system, Ashland was originally somewhere "near the bottom of the B list." Then, driving through it en route to Bend, they started thinking about the college town more seriously. By the time they re-ranked and re-rated, Ashland suddenly leaped from the bottom of the B list to the top of the A list ...

Area colleges, universities build retirement communities near campuses to benefit students and seniors
Mirror - 17 Jun 2007
... STATE COLLEGE, PA— Burned out on the Sunshine State after more than a decade of retirement, Bob and Ruth Ellis were ready for a change of scenery when they learned Penn State University was developing a community for retirees ...

Colleges and universities across the country are taking notice that retirement isn’t limited to the rocking chair on the front porch.

They’ve realized that there are many people who would rather approach retirement as a learning experience, complete with home football games and class assignments.

Penn State is the first in the area to establish a retirement community and bless it with a collegiate advantage, and at least two other central Pennsylvania institutions are in the planning stages to do the same ...
