students volunteer 10,000 hours and rock The event will celebrate the accomplishment of their goal: 10,000 hours volunteered by UW students in one year. Students who volunteered 10 or more hours in the past year registered for a free ticket to the show and are now rewarded with a chance to hear the soulful guitar solos of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Although the concert is a reward for UW students volunteering a total of 10,000 hours, concert organizer Katy Resop says the event really isn’t about the concert or the 10,000 hours. “10,000 hours is a numerical goal that is visible. The real goal is to get people to volunteer and to create lifelong volunteers,” Resop says. The 10,000 Hours Show is a nationwide volunteer recruitment effort that started in Iowa and has spread to campuses across the United States. UW-Madison, along with the Morgridge Center, the L&S Honors Programs, the Chancellor’s Office and other community contributors, created and funded the first Madison concert ... Staff
Editorial: College needs to step up on-campus housing While ResLife reports that those who were bumped will eventually be reinstated, offers for housing for these students will likely consist of overcrowd rooms with randomly assigned roommates, a prospect which does not excite many. The issue, then, appears to be a lack of adequate space. There are several ways for the College to address these concerns and make sure that next year there are not so many students left out in the cold ... A
flicker of hope on student housing Came back none the wiser. Other than discovering potential remedies are awfully messy. Time-consuming, too ... Problem is, residents, students, Brock University and Niagara College are, to varying degrees, uncomfortable with a self-interested, money-making group - landlords - policing the student housing industry. They want municipalities to take charge ... TOWN

tables housing ordinance The legislation was requested in March by some Fifth and Sixth street-area citizens concerned that neighborhood houses in the R-2 residential-zoned district for single family dwellings would be converted into apartments for college students. The proposed ordinance provides a narrow definition of “single family” aimed at enhancing enforcement of city zoning regulations. “Please consider people who live in the R-1 and R-2 districts because they are so restrictive,” Fifth Street resident Sherry Stephenson asked council on Thursday ... competitor cooks up deliveries From a house-turned-business, appropriately on Cook Drive off East State Street, owner Matt Pearson said he is working to “bring a little bit of Mom’s home cooking to a college town.” False rumors have been going around that Delivery Dough is based out of Pearson’s home, which is in Nelsonville, said John Rinaldi, Delivery Dough’s media coordinator. Pearson converted the house on Cook Drive into a commercial business that opened two months ago, complete with a professional-quality kitchen and a staff of 15 employees ... Leaders
of Three Cities Speak at “State of Downtown” Meeting College towns - All three cities represented today are major college towns, with Boise just now gaining that position ... Asked to name their biggest challenges, Ageton said it is addressing continued growth pressures within the framework of Boulder’s longstanding “slow growth” policies, which have defined open space around the city and prohibit buildings taller than about five stories. Nickels said transportation of people and goods is a key concern, as is providing housing that is affordable to the people who work in Seattle. Bieter again mentioned the difficulty of funding infrastructure in the state of Idaho, adding “we need all of us to be as creative as we can.” He also wishes citizens would make the connections between various challenges of growth. “People say ‘don’t allow infill,’ but they also say ‘Don’t take away my neighborhood school,’” he noted. They key, he concluded, may be engaging our imaginations to decide what sort of city we want to be ... Miles

Campus details released Their comments came during a student-oriented forum planned to discuss East Campus, the 38-acre project university officials hope will reinvent the college-town image of College Park. After a presentation that laid out the highlights of the shopping, restaurants and housing options university officials hope East Campus will attract, students appeared impressed by the project's massive scope but said they were concerned about its timeline. The two-phase project is scheduled to deliver restaurants and a multiplex movie theater by 2011, but it wouldn't be ready for students to move into housing until 2016. That's a long way off for the more than 600 students who found out last week they wouldn't have on-campus housing their senior year due to dire shortages ... Common

expansion threatens Borough's tax revenue Though the proposed arts neighborhood, to be constructed in the area surrounding the Dinky and the Wawa, will most likely lead to increased tax revenue for the Borough, the University's increasing ownership of Borough land is cause for concern, Borough Councilman Andrew Koontz said in an interview yesterday. "It's not in the interest of the community for the University to acquire property that is currently on the tax rolls," he said. As the University expands within the Borough, the Borough becomes more dependent on the University's tax contribution, which is motivated by goodwill. Tax contributions from non-University owned Borough properties are mandatory. 8
landlords ticketed in overcrowding Marty Collins, the commissioner of Milwaukee's Department of Neighborhood Services, said a city ordinance prohibits more than three unrelated individuals living in a housing unit that doesn't have a rooming house permit. Blacksburg, a dark day descends Still stunned by the news that 32 people were fatally shot yesterday on a campus located in a close-knit southern Virginia town, residents are still trying to sort out what appears to be a senseless and brutal crime. Most here have differing stories about how they first heard the news, but all say it has irrevocably changed their town forever. And after officials presented an extremely hazy timeline of yesterday's events, most residents spent last night without answers to important questions, including whether friends are alive, injured or dead ... boast big bucks to spend "What we kept seeing in typical studies of demographics was there was no way you could account for the disposable income that students have just looking at what they're earning in Blacksburg," Diane Akers, the partnership's executive director said of the study ... Fairmount Properties, a Cleveland-based company working to bring a 40-acre, retail-heavy development to South Main Street, was one of the first developers to use the study. Last month, the company released a tenant list for its project that includes several national names, including Talbots, Coldwater Creek and Frank Theatres. The lineup is a big deal for Blacksburg, and some see it as a signal that small college towns are finally making it onto retailers' radars. "The college student as a whole across the country is becoming a more important consumer to retailers," Fairmount principal Randy Ruttenberg said in 2006. "And given that a good part of the student body at Virginia Tech comes from families whose wealth is above the national average, also makes this an attractive opportunity." ... Growing
fast Although university officials say such growth is a good thing to have, there are also difficulties that come with rapid expansion ... Q: How does the Stamats (pronounced “stay-mates”) study that UNA partnered with the city of Florence help alleviate some of these growth issues? We hope to be responsive to the college graduate who wants to stay here to find employment and the one who doesn’t ... Claremont
