Student housing complex planned
$96 million project will convert Kensington Village in Cheektowaga
Buffalo News - 14 Apr 2007
...CEEKTOWAGA, NY - Kensington Village in Cheektowaga, the area’s first major suburban apartment complex, will be converted into a gated community for student housing in a nearly $100 million project.

The apartments just off Eggert Road near the Buffalo city line will be aimed at students attending the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State, Daemen, Canisius, Erie Community, Medaille and Villa Maria colleges ...

'College town' must appeal to community
Expert says retailers near universities must attract nonstudents.
Tribune - 14 Apr 2007
... NOTRE DAME / SOUTH BEND, IN - The ideal college town includes a central public gathering place -- a plaza or square featuring sculpture, benches and other attractions, he said. Other important elements are desirable housing, narrow streets to slow traffic, pedestrian crosswalks and street parking, he said ...

Village planned next to UNBC
Citizen - 14 Apr 2007
... PRINCE GEORGE, NB - An update of the land master plan at UNBC has a long-term vision for a university village near the Northern Sport Centre.

"What we are missing today are some services that could be provided to our own university community," said Sharon Cochran, UNBC vice-president of special projects.

The potential vision involves a community complementing the UNBC campus that could include a variety of housing, retail, personal services, health care and entertainment, Cochran said.

The 45-acre site butts up against the University Heights neighbourhood project that involves a consortium of 14 developers ...

Life in a college town: When you're 730 miles apart
Sun-Gazette - 14 Apr 2007
...WILLIAMSPORT, MA - We aren’t the typical college couple, but that’s OK with me. We are both on track to do what we want to do with our lives and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Long-distance relationships are tough — especially when we have school work, extracurricular activities and projects to do. The time slips away. I knew what I was getting into when we began dating, but I thought we had a good thing so I figured we should give the long-distance relationship a whirl ...

NKU wants off-campus exodus
Enquirer - 14 Apr 2007
... Highland Heights, KY - Northern Kentucky University is trying to get as many students housed off-campus as possible to alleviate the campus housing shortage.

NKU brought some landlords for apartment complexes across the region on campus Thursday to entice students to live off-campus.

Until the college can build another dormitory, NKU will turn to apartment fairs and offer financial incentives to live off-campus, said Matthew Brown, director of housing ...

Students ask regents for housing help
Sun - 14 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland's student government president appealed yesterday to the state university system's Board of Regents for help in stemming future housing crises on the College Park campus.

Last week, university officials informed more than 500 juniors there was not enough housing to offer them rooms on campus in the fall, prompting about 50 students to form a makeshift tent city in protest.

"We're looking for the board to work with the university to help expedite off-campus housing developments, and at least consider the prospect of new traditional residence halls," said Emma Simson, the student government president ...

On-campus housing in high demand at W&M
The last time so many students applied to live on campus was after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Daily Press - 14 Apr 2007
... WILLIAMSBURG, VA - On-campus living is in high demand at the College of William and Mary these days because of a seemingly widespread desire to avoid living in a surrounding town that is seen by many students as unwelcoming, student leaders said.

This year, the campus housing lottery cut out 326 students in the first round, a number about 150 more than last year, according to W&M's student newspaper, the Flat Hat.

Speaking before the City Council on Thursday, student assembly President-elect Zach Pilchen cited the spike in students trying to live on campus as the latest evidence of a peaking discomfort between students and city residents. At the heart of the matter is Williamsburg's rule prohibiting more than three unrelated people from living in an off-campus house, Pilchen said ...

Tent city goes up again at UVM
Free Press - 14 Apr 2007
... BURLINGTON, VT - It is becoming a rite of spring, the tent city pitched at the University of Vermont by students promoting a "livable wage" campaign for UVM employees ...

If employees who work at UVM for private contractors are included, more than 400 fall below the $12.28 standard, according to Sam Maron, a coordinator for the Student Labor Action Project and a member of the task force. The task force was not charged with considering wage levels paid by private contractors -- such as Sodexho, the company that manages UVM's food service, or construction companies -- but the students want UVM to require livable wages on their part, too ...

Students Protest for Living Wage Video
WCAV - 13 Apr 2007
... CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Nearly 20 students protested during the Board of Visitors meeting about the lack of a living wage for some University of Virginia employees.

The Living Wage Campaign wants the Board of Visitors to raise the wages of UVa employees who are at the bottom of the payscale. They believe the less than $10 an hour wage is hardly enough to live in this expensive town.

"We just think that it is important that people who work a 40-hour work week, that have a full-time job at the University, are able to afford housing, food, transportation in the City of Charlottesville," said Kevin Simowitz ...

‘College town’ needs off-campus appeal, expert tells Notre Dame crowd
Tribune - 13 Apr 2007
... SOUTH BEND, IN — The ideal mix for a successful development near campus is 70 percent local retailers and 30 percent national chains, he said at the start of a conference titled "Creating a 21st Century College Town.’ ...

UMD Students End Tent Protest
Students Call For More Housing On, Near Campus
nbc4 - 13 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - Students who have been sleeping in tents this week at the University of Maryland took their protest to the school's Board of Regents on Friday.

The students argue that the university needs to have additional affordable housing on and near campus.

Earlier this month, school officials announced that hundreds of upcoming juniors and seniors will be kicked out of their dorms next school year because of a housing shortage ...

Attractions of a College Town
There's something about living near a campus that stimulates the mind and spirit.
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine - May 2007
... USA - Nothing matches the vibe of a college town. Universities throw off an energy that infuses their communities with culture, creativity and a love of learning. No wonder such places draw so many retirees. Living in a college town can be a smart financial move, too. Compared with life in a big city, you'll save on everything from housing to recreation.

We chose five great college towns that not only take full advantage of what the local university has to offer, but also stand on their own merits. Each has theaters, galleries and adult-education courses outside the university, not to mention excellent health care, reasonable living costs, pleasant winters and a community of active retirees who refuse to put their lives on cruise control ...

Shape up for Town & Gown run
Oxford Mail - 13 Apr 2007
... OXFORD, UK - The sun is shining, the birds are singing and congestion in Oxford city centre is as bad as ever.

So why not ditch the car, put on the pumps and get in training for next month's Town and Gown run?

This will be the 26th annual 10km race through the picturesque college-flanked streets of Oxford to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign ...

Off campus, a greater risk for fire
19 student fire deaths near campuses around U.S. this year
Michigan Daily - 13 Apr 2007
... USA - "I remember standing outside, watching my house burn down, all my belongings going up in flames, and thinking, 'Is this real?' " Perrin said.

Perrin's experience is hardly uncommon, though.

According to Campus Firewatch, a monthly newsletter published by former Center for Campus Fire Safety director Ed Comeau, a total of 108 fire-related fatalities have occurred on or near college campuses since January 2000. Eighty-one percent of those deaths occurred in off-campus housing, he said ...

Plans for a new dorm, renovations still in the works
Brown Daily Herald - 13 Apr 2007
... PROVIDENCE, RI - Currently, the University only houses about 80 percent of undergrads on campus, a proportion lower than its peer institutions, Carey said. "This level is not where we should be institutionally," Carey said. The University would have to increase the number of residence hall beds by 600 to reach its goal of 90 percent on-campus residents, he said.

"As a goal, increasing the amount of on-campus housing has resonated well with students that we have talked with," ...

U. proposes new transit routes, bio-diesel buses
Princetonian - 13 Apr 2007
... PRINCETON, NJ - University officials unveiled a proposed redesign of the campus shuttle system in a meeting with community members last night. The plan is scheduled for implementation in January 2008.

The newly proposed shuttle routes will most likely not take effect until after the spring 2008 semester, however, with modifications continuing over the next decade to reflect alterations in the University's Master Plan.

"So many other decisions that impact on our transit system are still being considered," Director of Community and Regional Affairs Kristin Appelget said, citing the planned addition of parking structures and buildings over the next 10 years ...

Housing huddle
Diamondback - 13 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - A student meeting in front of the student encampment on McKeldin Mall yesterday resembled more of a picnic than a protest rally, as student leaders had previously called it, but demands for more student housing are now better focused, leaders said.

The Student Government Association planned yesterday to bolster student concerns with a petition bearing 10,000 student signatures, making clear a wide swath of the campus community supports housing for future seniors.

More than 600 students next year - mostly seniors - won't be living on the campus, Resident Life announced last week, prompting calls for student action and a last-minute scramble for housing downtown ...

County to examine housing problem
Diamondback - 13 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - County plans to re-chart a course for Route 1 development could include incentives to build student housing, but after a similar effort five years ago failed to draw the interest county and city officials expected, student leaders are clamoring for input.

Planning officials laid out detailed guidelines aimed at shepherding in new retail, housing and office space along the three-mile-long College Park corridor in 2002, but with only a few developments on the books, city and county officials say the plans could use another look. Chief among the officials' concern is student housing: Despite a 900-bed student housing complex opened in 2005, demand for off-campus housing has proved insatiable.

This year, however, there's a new sense of urgency. A flood of more than 600 students now scrambling for shelter downtown after getting the boot from Resident Life has strained the city's housing stock. That's caused the development plan to come under greater scrutiny from student leaders, who blamed the county for abusing its zoning authority at a Student Government Association rally yesterday ...

Web Site Assists Students With Finding Off-campus Housing
Daily Northwestern - 13 Apr 2007
... EVANSTON, IL - Imagine getting a check for $100 after signing the lease for a new apartment.

Use Movingoffcampus.com, and that just might be a reality.

The Web site launched a Northwestern account in early February, making NU the seventh university to join the housing site, which gives students a portion of its commission when they mention the site to an affiliated property owner ...

Bend over for landlords
Lantern - 13 Apr 2007
... ATHENS, OH - There was a story in The Lantern recently about students teaming up to sue NorthSteppe realty for charging them nearly $1,700 for unpaid gas bills, although the real amount they expected to pay was closer to $50. I applaud the students, Rachel Dawson and Leigh Luckner for stepping up and fighting this outrageous charge. Certainly the impossible amount made legal action the obvious choice, but nevertheless the suit is a step in the right direction for all students who rent from shady off-campus realtors or owners.

New Condo's, Hotel coming to Blacksburg
Collegiate Times - 12 Apr 2007
... BLACKSBURG, VA - Palmetto State Enterprises hopes to build a $30 million condominium complex by fall 2008, right behind Lane Stadium, dubbed The Legends of Blacksburg. The Collegiate Inn is spending $3.5 million on renovations to become Blacksburg’s first hotel-condo by fall 2007. What’s more, Colosseum, a six-floor, $60 million sports luxury condominium hotel is planned to be built on South Main Street by 2009.

Be it hotels, condos or hotel-condos, massive sports luxury facilities catered toward returning Virginia Tech alumni certainly seem to be “on the rise.”

According to a recent article in The Roanoke Times, many college towns that are relatively small like Blacksburg have seen condominium projects pop up within the last couple of years. Also like Blacksburg, most of the town’s schools have large athletic programs with a strong fan base ...

Muse: Making noise, getting fined
In preparation for Picnic Day, MUSE breaks down the city noise ordinance
Aggie - 12 Apr 2007
... DAVIS, CA - With a population of roughly 64,000, which includes over 30,000 university students, Davis is a true college town. However, this massive student population dispersed among small-town inhabitants can create problems for both sides. The city noise ordinance and its noise violations are one major source of tension between the two groups.

"A noise ordinance is a necessary thing when you have a college town that has a lot of residential activity," said Lieutenant Colleen Turay of the Davis Police Department. "In a commercial district where you have bars and businesses, it doesn't bother people, but in a town like this [there] are a lot of residential parties and you have to be able to deal with that. To give people the ability to live around college students, there has to be some reasonable limitations that are tolerable to the neighborhood, while still trying to allow for [college] social life." ...

'Girls Gone Wild' to film in Blacksburg
Virginia Tech faculty are being asked to caution students against being exploited.
New River Valley Current - 12 Apr 2007
... BLACKSBURG, VA - "Girls Gone Wild" has plans to visit Blacksburg next week, and Virginia Tech officials aren't happy about it ...

Susanna Rinehart, an assistant provost, encouraged faculty attending Tuesday night's faculty senate meeting to warn their students about being exploited by the production company.

"This is a heinous, heinous, operation," she said. "It is a scourge, and our students are unbelievably vulnerable." ...

Court Upholds City-Campus Development Plan Agreement
Daily Californian - 11 Apr 2007
... BERKELEY, CA - A lawsuit challenging a settlement between UC Berkeley and the city of Berkeley over a long-term campus expansion plan was rejected Thursday, though plaintiffs say they will appeal the decision.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Jo-Lynne Lee upheld the May 2005 settlement, which resolved a lawsuit filed by the city against the university to secure greater control over the UC Berkeley 2020 Long Range Development Plan and more money from the university for city services.

Four residents filed suit against the city in September 2005 because they believed the city ceded too much power to the university and received inadequate mitigation funds ...

Best of Ann Arbor: Best Coffee Shop
Michigan Daily - 11 Apr 2007
... ANN ARBOR, MI - Six Espresso Royale Cafes. Two Amer's Mediteranian Delis. Two Sweetwater cafes. Rendezvous. Ambrosia. Ten Starbucks. As a college student in Ann Arbor, you're never far from a coffee shop.

Ann Arbor seems to breed coffee houses. Patrons can frequent the mainstream Starbucks or the indie Ambrosia or they can settle for a compromise - a coffee shop that doesn't make them feel like part of the establishment but that also doesn't make them feel overdressed wearing khakis and a polo.

Espresso Royale is a happy medium between the coffee shops Ann Arbor has to offer. Without being a suffocating chain or pretenses of being a cultural hub, ERC has a welcoming atmosphere ...

OPPOSITION EXPRESSED ON PROPOSED STUDENT HOUSING
Palladium-Times - 11 Apr 2007
... OSEWGO, NY - Oswego residents packed into the Oswego Town Hall Tuesday night to seemingly express their disapproval in regards to a proposed project of student suites on Johnson Road that would house nearly 700 students.

Members of the real estate development group, United Group of Companies, were present to discuss the designs, goals and objectives of the project during a scheduled town planning board meeting. The group is scheduled to start construction late this summer, however, after a brief presentation from the group's representatives, the floor was handed over to the audience who proceeded to attack members with questions, concerns and suggestions ...

With rising demand, prices take a hike
Diamondback - 11 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - The exodus of 556 juniors into the off-campus housing market has sent some city rents rising, as leasing season peaks and some opportunistic landlords bank on this year's unprecedented demand.

Facing less oversight downtown than at large apartment buildings under single ownership, some landlords have increased prices in a well-known but notorious practice known as price gouging that is often prevalent during crises that produces shortages. So as high rise apartments fill quickly, and desperate students search deeper into the city and beyond, some are facing steeper prices than they would have just over a week ago.

They include students like Melissa, a junior government and politics and history major, who saw the annual rent at her Colombia Avenue home shoot up more than $1,000 after her landlord caught news that Resident Life denied rising seniors housing last week. She asked to be identified only by her first name so she could maintain a good relationship with him, she said ...

Bridging town and gown
Daily Princetonian - 11 Apr 2007
... PRINCETON, NJ - Last Thursday, University officials met with town residents to discuss the future of Princeton. The town voiced many concerns, including problems with the Dinky, the Wawa and other town and University institutions. Another major concern was that students are not spending enough money in the restaurants and shops of Princeton. It is certainly true that the famous bubble prevents many students from taking advantage of the amenities offered in the Princeton Township. This, however, is not solely the fault of students. If Princeton residents want students to take advantage of the town, they need to ensure that the students know what the community has to offer.

The best way to do this is through a "First Friday"-type event. First Fridays are currently features of many cities across the country that encourage people to come out, spend money and see what the town has to offer. As it stands, Princeton students know very little about the restaurants and shops in town. Restaurants and stores, in many cases, are expensive, close early and generally are not adapted to the college student lifestyle. A First Friday would be much like Communiversity, except that it would be oriented toward helping students familiarize themselves with the town ...

From the Editor: Same-day voter registration akin to that annoying fly
Summit - 10 Apr 2007
... Forest City, IA - I grew up in Minnesota, where same-day voter registration has been around for more than 30 years so I know it works. The number of voter fraud stories I heard in my years in Minnesota is exactly zero ...

With apologies to Republicans who warned during debate on the bill that we were ushering in an era of voter fraud with the passage of same-day voter registration, that's the least of my concerns.

Truth be told, the only effect of same-day registration I ever saw was that voting usually took 10 or 15 minutes longer in Minnesota than it did in Iowa. And that could be because when I did vote, I always did so in Mankato, a college town where scores of college students would same-day register on Election Day.

Still, the new law bugs me, kind of akin to that fly that just won't leave me alone when I'm trying to just relax with a nap in the lawn chair on a warm summer day; after all, who doesn't know an election is coming up? ...

A mixed review for university's arts gateway plan
Packet - 10 Apr 2007
... PRINCETON, NJ - A Mecca for culture, academics and public activity, Princeton University's proposed arts neighborhood might be the ultimate blending of town and gown for some, but for others the proposal looks more like a collision.

As some residents and officials criticize Princeton University's encroachment into downtown Princeton, university representatives said Thursday they hope to create a gateway out of what is typically thought of as the "back door" to Princeton Borough, Princeton Township and the school's campus.

"This is not just a campus neighborhood," said university Vice President and Secretary Robert Durkee of the combined academic and public space contained in the plan ...

Memorial Dedicated For Miami U. Fire Victims
WCPO - 10 Apr 2007
... OXFORD, OH - It was two years ago today that three Miami University students died in an off campus house fire. Today friends and family of the three gathered on campus to be sure that the lives lost are forever remembered.

You can't walk into King library without passing the new memorial boulder. It was dedicated during a service today. Inscribed on a plaque are the names, Stephen Smith, Julie Turnbull and Kate Welling.

The three died inside an Oxford house April 10, 2005 after a couch caught on fire. Turnbull is from Milford. Her father Doug Turnbull says, "As a parent you really just want your child to be remembered. We'll certainly remember her forever, but we want everyone to remember.” Turnbull hopes that students who walk by will notice the memorial and be reminded that they are not immortal. They need to be careful and they need to appreciate every moment ...

House in a box
Our View: The housing situation in College Park has simply reached critical conditions.
Diamondback - 10 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - Editor's note: In response to university officials who claim the housing crisis was impossible to predict, we are reprinting our Jan. 29 editorial unaltered.

Unless the university considers a tent city on McKeldin Mall or same-sex cuddling in freshman highrises to be reasonable options towards addressing the on-campus housing crisis, it's clear the situation is getting out of hand. Simply put, there are far more students than available beds - this year was the first where freshman spring admits were not guaranteed on-campus housing. Already, it is completely inadvisable for anyone to transfer to the university, and the situation is only going to get worse.

Transfer students are a proverbial canary in the gold mine for the university, and they're looking a bit peaked. Beyond receiving the worst priority housing points - which mean they are essentially blackballed from campus - transfer students are informed of admissions decisions well into the summer, when prime off-campus real estate such as the University View has already filled up ...

University not planning any new dorms
Diamondback - 10 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - In the face of an unprecedented housing crisis, university officials said they won't pursue any new on-campus housing projects this year despite high developer interest and assurances that the Board of Regents would provide loans to fund construction.

In the past year alone, the university passed on at least three bids from developers looking to enter a public-private partnership to build a new dorm - an arrangement regents said in interviews this week they have encouraged.

"We're committed to do partnerships with developers that place the projects on campus," said Joe Vivona, system vice chancellor for administration and finance. "If you have that kind of demand you might be able to get developers to build on campus. The university certainly has partners willing to work with them." ...

Bumped? Call the mayor
Flat Hat - 10 Apr 2007
... WILLIAMSBURG, VA - With the string of evictions earlier in the semester and now the high number of bumped students who may be forced to find off-campus housing, this issue certainly seems to have come to a boiling point. Students are going to start demanding action from our own Student Assembly, from the City of Williamsburg and from the student body itself. Thankfully, our new executive seems to have prioritized this issue; SA President-elect Zach Pilchen declared to me that, “You can rest assured that we will place this issue at the forefront of our administration’s relationship with the city, and that positive progress can be expected from your Student Assembly on this front for the first time in 15 years.” That is exactly the mindset we need when tackling this issue, and I look forward to hearing and reviewing Pilchen’s logistical plans for making it happen.

The three-person housing rule needs to be our main concern until we make significant headway –– a change in the ordinance will significantly affect other important student concerns like student parking and voting rights, as well as help build positive relations between the College and the city ...

BU offers Hyatt rooms for housing selection
Free Press - 10 Apr 2007
... BOSTON, MA - Boston University is offering students the option to live in the Hyatt Regency hotel in Cambridge for the fall 2007 semester, in an effort to allow all incoming freshmen to live on campus, according to an email sent to students yesterday from Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore.

For past fall semesters since 2002, freshmen and transfer students have been housed in the Hyatt and other nearby local hotels because of an overflow of housing requests. In his email, Elmore stressed the importance of ensuring freshmen live in on campus so they can adjust more easily to college life ...

Students Build Tent City To Protest UMD Housing Shortage
642 Juniors, Seniors Kicked Off Campus
NBC4 - 9 Apr 2007
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Students at the University of Maryland have begun setting up a tent city at their respective academic quads this week to protest the housing shortage on campus.

Last week, the university informed 642 juniors and seniors that they will be kicked off campus next fall.

Many said the news comes late in the leasing process, leaving students scrambling to find housing ...

SGA plans housing shortage protest
Diamondback - 9 Apr 2007
... COLLEGE PARK, MD - The SGA will lead a week-long campout on McKeldin Mall starting tonight in protest of a Board of Regents decision last year to deny the university money for a new dorm, a move student government officials see as exacerbating the current housing crises.

After Resident Life denied 556 rising seniors on-campus housing last week, Student Government Association President Emma Simson said she wanted to send a stark message to the University System of Maryland's governing board who she blamed for the university's housing shortage.

"The announcement last week from Resident Life illustrates the extreme housing shortage we face at College Park," she said, "and it serves as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the Board of Regents that housing projects are needed." ...

Developers pursue zoning for student housing
School officials and some residents question the need for the project
Journal - 9 Apr 2007
... WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A growing number of Washington Park and West Salem residents say they are concerned that the project will have negative effect on the environment and traffic in their neighborhoods, even as they want the Gateway area to grow. They wonder about the long-term future of a project built to suit such a narrow slice of the real-estate market.

"There doesn't appear to be a strong commitment from any university," said Leslie Kamtman, the president of the Washington Park Neighborhood Association. "We haven't been given a commitment from anyone but Place Properties that there is high student demand." ...

The greenest city in the U.S.A.
Star - 8 Apr 2007

A visitor to Burlington might expect a giant recycling bin on the interstate ramp, perhaps an emissions control welcoming station. Or why not a billboard trumpeting this achievement? ...

Future engineers construct playground
Chalmette site now features slides, swings
Times-Picayune - 8 Apr 2007
... CHALMETTE, LA - Seeking to give children a place to frolic as well as to help revitalize a neighborhood hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, more than 500 Georgia Tech students erected a playground Saturday in the heart of Chalmette.

"We are hoping the playground will be a point of hope and give the neighborhood a point to rally around to try to come back," said Lisa Bradway, a 22-year-old mechanical engineering major at the Atlanta school ...

Powwow draws tribal traditions
Journal-World - 9 Apr 2007
... LAWRENCE, KS - Lawrence can be described as unique in several different ways; one way is how many American Indians are represented in town.

About 150 tribes from 38 states live in Lawrence, thanks largely to Haskell Indian Nations University.

Many of those were present at the Kansas University Powwow on Saturday ... “It is very unusual,” said Dustina Abrahamson, who was at the powwow. “Any other college town you go to, they have, max, 10 different tribes.” ...

Symphony audience will be tempted to dance
News - 8 Apr 2007
... ANN ARBOR, MI - But the key of "A Squared,'' peculiar to a certain Midwestern college town on the Huron River, is a genuinely bright key, and patrons who turn out Saturday for a concert of "Dances in the Key of A Squared,'' performed by the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra to end its main-stage subscription series at the Michigan Theater, are in for a lively event ...

The Ann Arbor Symphony has plenty to dance about these days. Members of its administrative staff have just moved into roomy new offices in the Dahlmann Building on East Huron Street. Lipsky has been re-engaged for a new, five-year contract. Attendance at series concerts is up.

The youth concerts that Lipsky envisioned reaching school-age audiences from southeast Michigan are flourishing, as are the orchestra's Sunday afternoon family concerts and its daytime Matinee Musicale series for seniors. And next Sunday, the orchestra branches out yet again, taking its Saturday music, with some "local key'' variations, to Ypsilanti's Pease Auditorium (see accompanying story) ...

As We See It: 100 years at the beach
Sentinel - 8 Apr 2007
... SANTA CRUZ , CA - Santa Cruz is an area that looks at itself differently than does the outside world.

To locals, Santa Cruz is a surf town, a university town, a progressive town and to some, an old-time hippie town.

To much of the outside world, it's the place that has the roller coaster.

Maybe most towns are like this: one kind of place to those who live there, and another to visitors. But Santa Cruz seems like that even more ...

WIRED FOR WI-FI
Centre Daily Times - 8 Apr 2007
... STATE COLEGE, PA - Laptops are becoming a common accessory these days -- their popularity boosted by access to free Wi-Fi at many local businesses and venues.

"You can't get away from it," said Brian Fisk, owner of Fisk Internet Services, which provides high-speed Internet to businesses. "Everyone's mobile now. People just want to be connected where they are."

And more and more businesses see offering free wireless Internet as an added convenience for customers and a lure for visitors looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, find some quiet and get some work done ...

Tuskegee designated as national historic site
American - 8 Apr 2007
...TUSKEGEE, AL -
In 1881, when the school was founded, there was no land for the school, no buildings and an appropriation of only $2,000 for faculty salaries.

Washington borrowed money to buy an old, rundown plantation, used student labor to erect buildings in exchange for their education and graduated the first class in 1895.

Today, Tuskegee is a university housing 3,000 students. No longer restricted to normal and industrial trades, it offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs. It is the only campus in the United States that is designated a national historic site ...

The university would send a warning letter to any students cited by either campus or Seattle police. A second citation would require the student to attend mediation with the accuser. A third police citation -- or failure to attend mediation -- would start disciplinary action, which could end in expulsion ...
