More people are looking to make their homes in
college towns.
In Life 2.0: How People Across America Are
Transforming Their Lives by Finding the Where of Their Happiness,
Forbes publisher Rich Karlgaard examines a growing shift in "executive
class" people from metropolitan areas on the coasts to smaller
cities; including college towns like Bozeman, MT; Des Moines,
IA; Madison, WI; and Oxford, MS. These pioneers are looking for
more conducive business climates, a stronger sense of home, lower
cost of living and higher quality of life. Karlgaard believes
that "small cities could well outperform large cities economically
over the next decade."
College towns also have become a major draw for
retirees looking to locate in communities with a wealth of recreational
and intellectual opportunities.
A
PASSION FOR PRESERVATION A Duluth preservationist is partnering with friends
across the nation to restore the former Christian Science Temple.
News Tribune - 19 Sep 2005
DULUTH, MN/SUPERIOR, WI - Kristbjorg Fisher of Duluth has had
her eye on restoring a historic church in Superior for a long
time...
Fisher, a retired English professor, has purchased
five historic homes in Duluth to renovate them.
"I rent them out, but I'm not in the rental
business to make a living," Fisher said. "I rent them
out to pay for my restoration projects."
Fisher said she believes her passion for preservation
comes from her father, a cabinet-maker in Norway, where she was
born...

Property History
Clinton Loop Vivian was Ithaca's premier architect in the Colonial
Revival style. Vivian (1861-1930) was the architect for many residences
in Ithaca, Trumansburg, and Cayuga Heights, New York, and In New
Haven, Connecticut. He also designed many Ithaca commercial and
academic buildings. Vivian was active in local civic affairs and
served as the first City of Ithaca Building Commissioner (1909-1912)
and as City Assessor (1918-1921). 945 East State Street is a relatively
modest project for C. L. Vivian. It was commissioned by Edward
McNally, who was coachman to Cornell University President Jacob
Gould Schurman. McNally died during construction, but his young
daughters Elizabeth and Margaret completed the project and lived
in the house for many decades, Margaret until her death in 1967.
Property Description
This East Hill home displays aspects of the late Victorian, Colonial
Revival, and Craftsman styles. Its most prominent element is the
gracious entrance porch, which features wide eave overhangs, brackets,
and diagional railing supports. The cladding is shingle and stucco.
The house is topped by a handsome roof with four gables. The interior
features American chestnut trim and built-ins, which include dining
room cabinets reinstalled from an Edwardian butler's pantry (removed
for the construction of a second bathroom). A 1970s addition,

to build the opulent home. Professor Andrews and his wife Harriet
lived there until retirement in 1931. In 1932, the widowed Harriet
returned to the home. Their daughter Esther and her husband Reber
Johnson, a violin professor at Oberlin College, continued maintaining
