The Option of
Urbanism
Christopher B. Leinberger
Metropolitan Land Strategist & Developer
... USA - The building of the built environment (real estate and the infrastructure
that supports real estate) is in the middle of a structural change, only
comparable to the change that took place 50-60 years ago. That mid-20th
century structural change converted real estate development into a modular,
formula-driven industry, based upon access and parking of automobiles and
trucks; I refer to it as “drivable sub-urbanism”. It responded
to market demand and yielded many benefits. Yet we now know that it actually
narrowed consumer options, consumed land at 6-8 times population growth
and produced “could be anywhere” places, based upon the “19
standard product types”. These drivable sub-urban formulas are re-enforced
by the financing of much of commercial real estate which has turned what
for thousands of years was a 40-year asset class into a product with a 7-10
year life ...

Just a few miles east of Cincinnati on Route 50 lies a gem of a town: Mariemont.
If you're a planner or planning commissioner and don't know about Mariemont,
you should.
[OK, it's not a college town, but this is one great community and college towns looking to create a walkable vibe could learn from it. - Ed.]

Neartown jewel was brought back to stunning life. And therein
lies a lesson.
Chronicle - 26 Jan 2008
... HOUSTON, TX - It was on the list to be condemned five years ago, and would
have been but for the vision of its owner ...
This man bought the house for a song. Given the home's location and proximity to downtown, he could have scraped the lot clean, built cookie-cutter condos and made a fortune. But that's not why he bought it.
Rather than dollar signs, he saw leaded stained glass windows without a single crack. Wood floors so stunning that had he sold only those, he could have built a Bellaire McMansion with the proceeds. Plaster walls a foot thick, so that you can't hear a single sound from the nearby freeway. Porches emanating from virtually every room, even some of the bathrooms. Enormous round windows with panoramic views of downtown. Huge wide staircases that begged for grand sweeping entrances. And so many windows and doors that the house is flooded with natural light on even the dimmest days ...

UNIVERSITY
ARCHITECTS RESTORE HISTORIC GEM
Inside U Va - 12 Jul 1995
... CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Just two blocks away from the old train yard in
downtown Charlottesville, a significant piece of Virginia history was quietly
deteriorating until a couple years ago, when it was rescued from near-oblivion
by architecture professor Michael J. Bednar and his wife, Elizabeth "Jo"
Lawson, an architect and capital programs manager in facilities management.
They are now lovingly
restoring what is probably the last surviving example of Jefferson-linked
architecture that had not been restored in this area. "We feel very fortunate
to have found this house," says Mr. Bednar. "We felt, too, that
this was a good thing to do for the community." ...
When house hunting a couple of years ago Mr. Bednar, a member of the American Institute of Architects' College of Fellows, and Ms. Lawson were looking simply for an older home with some character, nothing especially historic, they recall.
During that time a colleague, architecture professor K. Edward Lay, had students
undertake an in-depth study of the condemned house on Jefferson Street that
was almost completely hidden from view by overgrown brush and vines. The 1826-vintage
house, known as "The Farm," was listed as "The Lewis Farm"
on the National Register of Historic Places, and had almost certainly been
built by some of the same skilled craftsmen who constructed Jefferson's original
buildings at the University ...
